The Indonesia Situation
(Report # 50 -- As of 4:0 P.M. EDT)
1, President Sukarno yesterday called in several
cabinet ministers to state once more his dissatisfaction
with the army's continuing anti-Communist campaign, His
statement to this effect was made public by third deputy
prime minister Chaerul Saleh.. Despite Sukarno's statement,
several thousand youths paraded.in Djakarta today demanding
the dissolution of the PKI,
3, The army is also continuing its purge of leftist
civil authorities, The Home Affairs Minister, Major General
Sumarno, today announced the dismissal of five mayors of
major Javanese cities and eight Javanese administrative dis-
trict heads. The Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs
announced today that he has fired 1370 employees from his
ministry?
4, In another move against Communist influence in
Indonesia, the Minister of Education ordered today that all
school textbooks written by members or affiliates of the'PKI
be withdrawn from use, Books on Marxism by other authors
may be used if they are in "accord with state philosophy;"

5. Army commander Suharto stated to newsmen today
that Brigadier General Sugiharto is not replacing Foreign
Minister Subandrio as head of the Central Intelligence
Bureau (BPX) as earlier rumored, but has been named first
assistant army commander for intelligence. Suharto did
state, however, that ultimately the BPX would be "coordinated"
with the Supreme Operations Command (KOTI) under the
supervision of Sugiharto.
6. Suharto also stated today that the situation is
Central Java is improving with large numbers of rebel
forces surrending, One unconfirmed press report has
claimed that about 3000 Communislshave,surrendered to
military authorities near the Central Javanese city of
Jogjakarta, This figure is probably exaggerated,
