THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
On 10 June 1952? all persons of foreign citizenship (except citizens of the
Popular Democracies) living in the Galati area were summoned to the police
station at Galati by means of individual invitations. They were instructed
upon arrival that they would have to leave Rumania within two weeks. There
was no public notification of this decision.
2. Approximately one hundred families reported at the police station as a reiult
of this order, including Italian, French, Yugoslav, Turkish, German (East),
and one woman with an American passport. Each person was permitted to take
out 25 kg. of personal luggage but was not allowed to take out any currency.
3. A number of families refused to comply with the order, either for family
reasons or because they did not have the means to settle down abroad. All
these were sent to do forced labor in various villages in the Nasaud and
Fagaras districts. It is believed that similar expulsions have also taker.
