(Confidential - JMM) During his Headquarters visit today Chairman Lucien Nedzi, Intelligence Operations Subcommittee of House Armed Services: a. Met for two hours with Messrs. Tweedy and Parrott for a discussion of community coordination and the status of implementation of the President's directive of 5 November 1971. (See Memo far Record) b. Lunched with the Director, c. Toured the Cuban missile display. d. Was told by Mr. Colby of our periodic meetings with the Brookings Seminars. e. Was briefed for two hours by Mr. Carver on the present .situation and future prospects in Indochina, and the Agency's role and responsibilities under a cease fire. (See Memo far Record) f. Sat in briefly on Mr. Colby's monthly Comptroller meeting, g. Was brought up-to-date by Mr, Warner on the classification situation and implementation of the Executive (Jrder thereon as applied to the Agency. h. Discussed with Mr, Warner and OLC representatives the possibility of legislation to provide increased protection of intelli- gence sources and methods. ie Was brought up-to-date on a sensitive security case by Mr, Warner and Mr. Maury. (See Memo for Record. ) j. Took with him copies of investigative reports by the IG and OLC re Agency involvement in the drug traffic, .and indicated that after studying this material he might personally undertake to straighten out Representative Aspin, who had raised the matter in a letter to the Director. (Confidential - JGO) Received a call from Mr. William Van Ness, Chief' Counsel, Senate Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs, who told me tkiat he is setting u~p hearings for Senator Jackson (D. , Wash,) on the world oil situation. Present schedule will be for hearings in executive session on 11 and 12 December and Van Ness asked if the Director could be available to lead off in an off-the-record session, if necessary, with an intelligence briefing on the world oil situation with emphasis on the Middle East. Mr. Van Ness told me that a formal letter requesting the Director's appearance is in preparation but will probably not be relayed before torno:rrow afternoon. I thanked Van Ness for the advance information and told him I. would relay the informal request. He noted in closing that contact has been made with the White House to set up a number of Cabinet level witnesses for possible open hearings on this subject.
