4. I I Met with Mr. Ralph Preston, House
Appropriations Committee staff, and briefed him on ChiCom state-
ments on Soviet border buildup; ChiCom military airfield near
the Laotian box-der;, ChiCom instrumentation ship conducting sea
trials; a ChiCom atomic facility; Soviet ABM boosters; Soviet
Mediterranean. fleet; Soviet SS-13 Mod 2; Soviet airlift to
Egypt; and new deployment of radar equipment in Egypt.
5. I I Received a call from Mr. James
Lowenstein, ounare X ela.tions Committee staff, who told me
that Senator Muskie "forgot" to tell the Director that he would have
an additional list of questions for inclusion in the transcript.
Mr. Lowenstein will call me when the questions are ready to be
picked up. DDI, has been advised.
6. I met with Mr. John Blandford, Chief
Counsel, House Armed Services Committee, and told him that
Representative McCloskey's (R. , Calif. ) staff has contacted the
office again today requesting briefing on Agency activities in Laos.
The message has been relayed that clearance from the Chairman,
House Armed Services Committee, is necessary for such briefings.
Mr. Blandford will take care of the matter if it comes his way from
the Chairman.
I also briefed Mr. Blandford on the following items: ChiCom
statements on Soviet border buildup; ChiCom military airfield near
the Laotian bo.rder; ChiCom instrumentation ship conducting sea
trials; a ChiCom atomic facility; Soviet ABM boosters; Soviet
- v diterranean.fleet; Soviet SS-13 Mod 2; Soviet airlift to
Egypt; and new deployment of radar equipment in Egypt.
7. I I Steve Vossmeyer, in the office of
Senator Thomas Eagleton, called and said the Senator would like a follow-
up briefing to the one I gave him on 9 March preparatory to
his upcoming trip to Southeast Asia. He said the Senator hoped
could give it preferably on Tuesday,. 6 April, at either 1:00 or 2:00 p.m.
I said I would give him an answer tomorrow.
