NOTE TO: Legislative Counsel
SUBJECT: Abshire - Hillenbrand Call on Senator Case
1. Yesterday at the Hillenbrand committee meeting on RFE
and RL Hillenbrand confirmed the second-hand comments which I
passed to last Friday. He added that he had given a glow-
ing portrayal oft the value of the Radios to the Senator, based on his
service in Eastern Europe as well as his current position. Case
commented that he himself had not been aware of the funding of the
Radios, which he considered absolutely unacceptable, until it was
brought to his attention by his aide, John Marks. Marks, who was
present throughout the meeting, said nothing.
2. I asked Hillenbrand whether he had raised the advisability
of closed door hearings. Hillenbrand replied that he had not gone
into specifics. He figures he owes Senator Case at least another sub-
stantive visit by the 20th of this month.
