1. In March 19529 when a shortage of firewood in Macao raised its price to 19
pataoas per piruly fishermen in the Wan.shan islands began, cutting trees on the
islands and selling the wood in Macao. For a number of days9 the amount of
wood from the Wanshtlns reaohing Macao was as much as 109000 Gattios per day.
Aware of the wood=cutting activities of the fishormen9 the Chinese Communists
called a meeting of the Fishermen's Association in the islands9 and announced
that cutting of wood in the .slands was prohibited9 and that9 apart from
specially designated areas where fish Might be drie d9 fishermen were to con-
fuse their shore activities in the islands to an area within 50 feet of the
shore line. It was further announced that fishermen from the Wanshans would
not be allowed to Ao to the irainland w)'thout valid travel permits.
2. By mid-April the price,a-f firewood in Liaoao dropped to 12 pataoas per 100
catties9'as the result of a large shipment of firewood which had arrived in
Macao from Wuchow (i11-199 23-29). On 21 April six dunks arrived with a cargo
of .195008000 oatties of pine f irewood9 and several days later three junks
brought in an additional 9009000 patties. The wood had been sent by'the Joint
Management Department of the Chinese Communist government of Wuohow9 with the
approval of the Foreign Trade Bureau,
