CHILE: Army Commander in Chief General Prats
has reportedly ordered military legal experts to
give him a detailed analysis of the controversy be-
tween President Allende and congress over a consti-
tutional reform defining the government's role in
the economy. In this instance, however, the gov-
ernment's position appears to be correct; the Pres-
ident has announced that he will abide by any de-
cision of the Constitutional Tribunal--highest
legal arbiter of constitutional questions. The
army's close examination of political issues is not
typical, although some officers have made their in-
dividual political views known. Prats' action is
significant in that it is another example of the
growing politicization of the military under Allende.
