SUBJECT: Proxmire Request for an Intelligence
Briefing on the Soviet Economy
briefings to the Joint Economic Committee on the
Soviet economy since 1974. The DCI usuall has
given these briefings although last year
was the presenter. The briefing is done in closed
session but an unclassified version is produced by
the Committee. We have an opportunity to review
it before it is published (I have attached a copy
of the '81 version and clipped that portion that
came from the CIA briefing).
SOVA is prepared to develop the text for the
briefing. I will talk to Bob Gates about who
we would mmend to present the briefing. I
talked to and he will respond to
Proxmire's request in icating that we will provide
a briefing in early December but not stating who
o sked for some background. We have provided
will give it.
