First Meeting
of
SUPPORT SERVICES HISTORICAL BOARD

Mr. so attended this first meeting.
2. After opening comments by the chairman, Mr ro-
ceeded to discuss the historical programs as now being undertaken by the
Clandestine Services and the Intelligence Directorate. This discussion
covered the types of papers being prepared; personnel who are writing
them,; suggestions that we may wish to follow in organizing the Support
Services' effort.
3. Tentative decisions taken by the Board are:
a. We should start the Office histories with the formation
of CIA but use a transitional chapter to cover the period from the
demise of OSS through SSU and CIG. These chapters would thus
carry forward from OSS the surviving organizations which eventually
formed the nuclei for present Offices in the Support Services.
b. Each Support Office should be asked to designate a senior
officer who can act as a point of contact for the Board and follow up
on monographs being prepared by various individuals in the particular
office.
c. Monographs covering sensitive activities, projects, or
programs should be included in this writing effort, with the necessary
security restrictions placed on the finished product.
d. The cut-off date will be 31 December 1966.

4. Our initial step should be to ask each office to give us their advice
on the various papers that they believe should be written to cover the period
from 1947 through 1966. We would ask them to indicate by name those indi-
viduals who they think might write these papers and to also furnish us a
rough table of contents for the history of their particular office. We should
establish a relatively short deadline for this initial information in order
that we then might get on with the overall project.
5. Mr. suggested that many short papers might be written
by on-duty personnel. in cases where lengthy monographs were called for,
it might be desirable to consider the contract employment of annuitants or
the separation from, current activities of personnel due to retire within the
next 6 -12 months in order that they might devote their time to such papers
prior to retirement.
6. There was some discussion of the advisability of bringing the
historical representatives from offices other than those represented on
the Board more closely into the picture as alternate Board members per-
haps. A decision was deferred pending further study.
7. Mr. has generously agreed to assist us in drawing up
some informative guidelines to be used in initiating our historical effort.
