4435 WISCONSIN AVENUE, N W., WASHINGTON. D.G. 20016 244-354 Approved For Rele 2004/12/22 :-CIA-RDP89B00552R000070009t6 PUBLIC AFFAIRS STAFF CBS Evening News STATION WTOP TV CBS Network DATE - CITY December 19, 1975 700 Psi SUBJECT House Intelligence Committee Washington, D.C. WALTER CRONKITE: Inspite of intense opposition from the administration, the House Intelligence Committee voted today to make public details of some foreign undet:cover operations. But under the terms by which it got the information the committee vote still could be overruled by the President. Daniel Schorr reports on what is involved. DANIEL SCHORR: In 1972 in an operation initiated by the.State Department, the CIA funneled about $10 million into the Italian parliamentary elections, with President Nixon's approval.. Some of-it went to-.the Christian Democrats, much of it_ to the Socialists. -Both` parties held their own and, the Communists-- made only slight gains. _ A report on Angola, it's understood, says the CIA maintained a foothold there despite a 1969 Nixon decision to steer clear. It says Holden Roberto, leader of one of the Angolan factions, was long on the CIA's payroll, that the aid program to his group started last January. Angola i6 described as primarily a CIA operation, although approved by President Ford. A third report tells of millions of dollars worth of Soviet arms, captured by Israel from the Arabs, supplied to the rebellious Kurds in Iraq by the CIA in 1972. This, on direct instructions from President Nixon, responding to a request from the Shah of Iran. That report won't be released because of a tie vote in the committee, attributed to warnings about embarrass- ment to Iran and to Israel. As to the other two the White House says President Ford will personally review them and decide on their release.
