THE STAR PROGRAM: REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION
IN THE INSTALLATIONS DATA FILE
STAR, an acronym for Simplified Target Retrieval, is a computer pro-
gram that will enable you to request information from one or more records
in the Installations Data File (IDF) and to receive an answer within a
short time. Each request for information directs the computer to retrieve
one or more sectors from a record. Records may be identified by a machine
reference number (MRN) or by one of three mnemonics and a related value.
Sectors are identified by their respective mnemonics. Requests may be
transmitted via a teletypewriter, DCT 2000, or a CRT.
OUTPUT AND ON-LINE
EQUIPMENT
On-Line Equipment
Your output may be sent to any of the on-line equipment listed below.
* Sanders Tabular Display, a CRT device
* Kleinschmidt Electronic Data Printer
* ASR and KSR Teletypes
* UNIVAC DCT 2000
* a high-speed printer in the computer room
It is assumed that you know how to operate the equipment you elect to use.
An explanation of this equipment and how to use it is presented in Intro-
duction to the Remote Access Computer Service, second edition, published

The format of all output is determined by the program and will not
vary. Samples of output have been included at the end of this manual.
No Output
If your request cannot be answered, you will receive a message to
this effect. See also ERROR MESSAGES.
To use the program effectively it is assumed that you are familiar
with the IDF---its content, format, and sector mnemonics. This informa-
tion can be found in Format and Mnemonics for Records in the Installations
Data File. Copies are available in AID/PSG. All sectors except the INEGA
sector can be retrieved from each record in the file.

TELETYPE AND DCT REQUESTS
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Two types of requests may be submitted via a teletype or a DCT 2000:
1) a request for one or more or all
sectors from a single record
For Releasf ?f033E? 1 IA-RDP78T04759 009800010 47- 25X1
2) a request for the same sector from
several records
Both types can be submitted in one transmission.
REQUESTS FOR SECTORS
FROM A SINGLE RECORD
When requesting one or more sectors from a single record, your request
must include one of the four identifying mnemonics listed below, its re-
spective value, and the mnemonic for each sector to be retrieved.
IBE$$ BE number, 10 character positions
ICOMI COMIREX number, 10 character
positions
INPIC NPIC number, 12 character positions
MRN$$ machine reference number, 6
character positions
BE and machine reference numbers need not be right or left justified. For
machine reference numbers no leading zeros are required, and no blank
spaces are required for unused positions. However, the formats for NPIC
and COMIREX numbers must be exactly as specified in Format and Mnemonics
for Records in the Installations Data File. Leave spaces for all unused
positions.

In each request the terms are separated by commas, not spaces. The request
is closed by pressing the RETURN and LINE FEED keys [in that order], not
by a period. For example, this request would direct the computer to re-
trieve the IHEAD, IREAD, and INOTE sectors from the target record identi-
fied by machine reference number 3232:
This request would retrieve the ILOCA and IDESC sectors from the target
record identified by NPIC number 0165- 125
The spaces in the NPIC number indicate unused positions.
To retrieve all sectors from a given record specify ALL instead of
sector mnemonics. For example:

must include the appropriate sector mnemonic and one or more machine
reference numbers. These numbers are not preceded by the mnemonic MRN$$.

TRANSMITTING REQUESTS
ON A TELETYPEWRITER
The procedures for transmitting requests on ASR, KSR, and Kleinschmidt
teletypewriters are identical. Initialization and turnoff procedures and
procedures for correcting errors are explained in Introduction to the
Remote Access Computer Service.
You may submit as many requests as you wish in one transmission.
Begin typing each request at the left margin. Before transmitting your
first request, get a RYE READY message by pressing these keys in the order
listed:
ALT
MODE
if the computer system is available, you will receive a RYE READY message.
You will receive no other messages before transmitting a request. Then
call the program and transmit your request as indicated on the next page.
LEN is an abbreviation for logical equipment number; r/1 stands for the
RETURN and LINE FEED keys. If you want your output printed in the computer
room, specify LEN 600. In that case, you are responsible for picking up
your output; it will not be forwarded to you. Shortly after transmitting
your request, you will receive your output.

CRT REQUESTS
All requests transmitted via a CRT direct the computer to retrieve the
same sector from a maximum of five records. The sector to be retrieved is
identified by its mnemonic. Each record is identified on the basis of one
of the following mnemonics and its related value:
IBE$$ BE number, 10 character positions
ICOMI COMIREX number, 10 character positions
INPIC NPIC number, 12 character positions
MRN$$ machine reference number, 6 character
positions
BE and machine reference numbers need not be right or left justified. For
machine reference numbers no leading zeros are required, and no blank
spaces need be allowed for unused positions. However, the formats for
NPIC and COMIREX numbers must be exactly as specified in Format and
Mnemonics for Records in the Installations Data File. Leave spaces for
all unused positions. Instructions on when to type and transmit mnemonics
and values will be displayed as you run the program.
You have the option of displaying or printing your output. Sectors
will be displayed one at a time. If you elect to have your output printed,
printing will not begin until the program has been terminated. THE PAGE
TO BE PRINTED WILL NOT BE DISPLAYED BEFORE IT IS PRINTED. If you want
your output printed in the computer room, specify LEN 600 when calling
the program. In that case, you are responsible for picking up your output;
it will not be forwarded to you.
Each time you call the program you may run it for no more than thirty
minutes.
Initialization and turnoff procedures for CRTs are explained in
Introduction to the Remote Access Computer Service. After the program
