13. JMM) Met with Chairman F. Edward Hebert,
House Arme Services Committee, and told him of the Director's appearance
this morning before the Inter-American Affairs Subcommittee of tle House
Foreign Affairs Committee, and of Representative Harrington's questions
and complaints regarding thie Director's refusal to discuss sensitive
operational matters.
I told Hebert of the request by Representatives Whitehurst and
Daniel for a briefing on He said he would
have no objection to our providing them with a "low key" briefing on the
subject.
In response to my question, Hebert said the Nedzi report had now
been completed and there was nothing in it we should get terribly upset
about but there were some things in it we would not like. He said we had
to recognize Nedzi had a problem with his liberal colleagues and we couldn't
expect a whitewash job. He said he thought it would be improper for us to
see the report prior to its release.
14. JMM) Met with Representative Peter Frelinghuysen
who had not been able to attend the Director's briefing of the Inter-American
Affairs Subcommittee this morning and briefly filled him in on the highlights
of the Chile situation.
