Dear Mr. Colby:
Now that 1974 is upon us, I would like to reiterate our invita-
tion for you to address the Los Angeles World Affairs Council.
In your letter of August 9, 1973, you indicated that we might
try to firm up a date sometime in 1974.
I wonder if late April or May would be possible? If not, then
perhaps in September. As Tom Jones indicated in his letter to
you last summer, we would be honored to host you at either a
luncheon or a dinner meeting of the Council.
Please know that we will do everything possible to insure your
visit will be successful and fruitful. I am enclosing the
latest brochure about the Los Angeles World Affairs Council.
Very best wishes for a happy and successful new year.
Sincerely,
Edmonde A. Haddad

international visitors come to Los Angeles
under the auspices of the Department of State.
The World Affairs Council serves as the official
Southern California programming agency for
these grantees. This involves arranging pro-
fessional appointments, sight-seeing, home hos-
pitality and visits to points of particular
cultural interest. Visitors include government
officials; business executives; educators; pro-
fessional men and women; representatives of
foreign press, radio and television; labor leaders;
artists and scientists from all over the world
The primary purpose of this program is tq
offer leaders from other nations an opportunity
to know Americans as individuals and as a
nation. The visitors gain knowledge about and
appreciation for life in the United States, its
culture, economy, and system of government.
This program is one of the most important
ventures in practical international relations
undertaken in America today, and Council
members may share in it as volunteer escorts
and hosts to these leaders and specialists.
Many national leaders of other countries
today are former grantees of the Educational
and Cultural Exchange Program. Among them
have been 8 Prime Ministers; 5 Presidents; I
Chancellor; I Governor General; and 209
Cabinet Ministers from 64 countries throughout
the world.
For further information regarding the Inter-
national Visitor Program, call (213) 629-3166.

limited in size and operated on a deluxe basis.

itinerary which combines special sight-seeing
opportunities with ample free time to shop,
rest, or pursue personal interests.

Now in its twentieth year, the Los Angeles
World Affairs Council is a community educa-
tional organization, non-partisan and non-pro-
fit, with a membership of nearly 7,000
representative citizens of this area. Its purpose
is to give its members and their guests the
opportunity to learn and discuss the facts and
issues shaping American foreign and defense
policy and related issues. Its belief is that an
informed public opinion is the democratic basis
for sound national policy and that public
understanding of the dynamics of international
relations is essential to the formation of such a
policy.
The Council takes no political stand, and
never advocates any specific policy or action. It
seeks to present all sides of complicated policy
questions. Since its organization in 1953, the
Council has remained independent of any other
organization local, national or international.
Council policy is established by a board of
directors of well-known Southern California
citizens, and its activities are carried out
through the cooperation of its directors, mem-
bers, and staff. The Council derives its financial
support from its members, both individual and
organizational. All who are interested are
invited to join and to participate in its
activities.
The Meaning of Membership:
Membership means being a part of one of
the most prestigious citizens' organizations in
the nation.
Membership in the Council and the con-
tribution of annual membership clues, is a
contribution to the cultural vitality of Southern
California. By joining and supporting the
Council, local residents make it possible for
the community to receive the leading, figures of
our time, and to provide them with a dis-
tinguished forum to discuss the major issues
confronting the world. Through membership in
the Council, citizens give their private assistance
to a voluntary effort to furnish a wide spectrum
of information to all interested people, without
bias, endorsement of any policy or viewpoint,
or support of any particular individual.
Membership has its personal rewards: the
opportunity to receive invitations to hear
first-hand the leaders of the world, to meet and
personally host distinguished foreign visitors
and to participate in special Diplomatic Tours
overseas.

The International Forum is an additional
activity available to all younger members of the
Los Angeles World Affairs Council.
The International Forum meets from time to
time to hear prominent speakers on inter-
national subjects.
The meetings are more informal than the
regular meetings of the Los Angeles World
Affairs Council. The speaker is limited to a 15
to 20 minute presentation which leaves time for
an extensive question -- and - answer period
and allows for more give and take between the
audience and the speaker.
To facilitate meaningful discussion, attend-
ance is limited to no more than 75 participants.
Meetings may be scheduled for breakfast,
lunch, or cocktails.
REGIONAL DIVISION.
In order L- better serve the wide geo-
graphical area of Southern California, the Los
Angeles World Affairs Council has joined with
prominent citizens of the Orange County area
to form an area council. This regional
organization presents major speakers at dinner
meetings for its membership.
World Affairs Council of Orange County:
The World Affairs Council of Orange
County, a division of the Los Angeles World
Affairs Council, holds regular meetings in the
major centers of that important area of
Southern California. Many speakers appearing
on the Los Angeles podium also address the
Orange County Council, as well as statesmen
invited especially for that council. It is led by a
distinguished group of Orange County residents
and guided and supported by the Board of
Directors of the Los Angeles Council. Member-
ship information may be obtained by con-
tacting the Los Angeles office, or the Orange
County office: (714) 835-2564.
World Affairs Council on the Air:
All Council programs are broadcast over
KUSC-FM (91.5 megacycles). These programs are
aired at 6 p.m. the same day of the Council meet-
ing. KUSC is affiliated with the National Public
Radio Network which serves 165 radio stations
coast to coast.
