THE NIGHT vVATCH. .
David Atlee Phillips. Atheneum, $10.95
ISBN 0-689-10754-4 -
In his 25 years with the CIA Phillips
rose from recn~it to "contract man" to
director of the Western hlemisphere
division. In 1975 he retired to farm an
independent agency involved in CIA-
related public relations activities. An
.amalgam of autobiography, espionage
and CIA history, Phillips's book is pre-
dictable when he is denying CIA assas-
sination plots or justifying intelligence
work in the national interest. The real
meat lies in the frank, closely detailed
portrayal of major clandestine opera-
tions. Phillips saw Castro match into
Havana, was in Mexico when Lee Har-
vey Oswald made his puzzling visit,
directed covert operations in Chile
shortly before A1lende's overthrow. He
was in the. action in Lebanon, Brazil,
Venezuela, Washington, D.C. There
are as many twists and turns here as a
.spy thriller, only it's the real thing, with
glimpses of Allen Dulles, JFK, Che
Guevara, double agent Kim Philby,
Howard Hunt, others. Index. First
printing 10,000. [Febraeary]
