DATE July 8, 1975 12:45 Ai'1 CITY Washington, D.C. GENERAL VERNON WALTERS T ICS ^J d'~ t om ' SUE O'BRIEN: The Washington Post says the.CIA encouraged a plot to keep Marxist Salvador Allende from becoming President of Chile, but that the scheme backfired. The Post says the plot called for the kidnapping of Chilean Army Commander Rene Schnieder, but the attempt failed when Schnieder was fatally shot. The Post says the idea was to provoke the military into taking control of Chile. In Atlanta, the Deputy Director of the CIA, meanwhile, says it's okay with him if Congress oversees the ,intelligence agency.
