The Sumgait Aluminum Plant, SAZ, is one of the components of the
industrial complex that has developed since World War II at Sumgait on
the Caspian Sea. It is situated 18 miles northwest of Baku. This plant
is one of the major producers of aluminum in the USSR, and is reported

A study of
shows this plant to be in
operation and consisting primarily of two pot rooms, each 1140'x 90'.
The foundation for a probable third pot room has been laid, but active
construction is not apparent. A recently enlarged thermal power plant
(See HTA-M25-57) is located approximately one mile, north of the
aluminum plant. There is no photographic evidence of alumina production
at or near this plant.
The major components of the plant are identified and described on
the following annotated photograph.
