Approved For Release 2006/01/30 : CIA-RDP69B00596R000100020038-3..,,:__.....__,._.._ -tL [oRD ( j6 /01 30 JUN I 'am an iirerinZ your letter of 6 April and am taking this opportunity to, oxpreas our appreciation of your intoreet in the truly critical field of optics. I can assure you that there is nothing strange about your letter or about the improvement you propose. I believe that raoct of the nor-r stronocal catadioptric syate: in curr :at use by government agencies (an e,>ample being the sue-tracking c?a ras at Cape Kennedy) have ade- quate radjustablo apertures: as part of the basic ocoign. Hc' over, th. oc special-purpose systems are een :rally not com- morcial itc?as, and your invention my provide a means of itncreasing the utility of the smaller co= rcita'l. systc= which are built to a certain price level rather than for a specific optical problem. I would sugest that you discuss your invention directly with the larger optical coin,, anies, each as those who advertise in publications of the Optical Society of Ame ica,# and also with the smaller "custom" optical :manufacturers in your area. You might also consider writing up your invention for publication,, Sly and Telescope being a logical place to start. The tact that you are interested In this problem`hcs indicates that you may soon be entering a career in optics. We would like to encourage you in this and to point out that there are numeroua scholarship and fellowship programs sup- ported by your government for the specific purpose of Ong possible the development of highly trained people to work in Approved For Release 2006/01/30 CIA-RDP69B00596R000100020038-3 Approved For Release 2006/01/30 : CIA-RDP69B00596R000100020038-3 optics and other critical defense areas. When an outstanding technical capability is combined with a sincere dedication to strengthening our 4over nont, 're also point out to young scientists the remarkable opportunities for a satisfying and rewarding career in Federal service. I hope that you will continue with advanced degree wont in optics,. and that you will consider such a Federal career when your technical educa- tion is complete. " :, she ~v!v ~~~~ April 1966 Mr. Albert D. Wheelon Deputy Director for Science and Technology Washington, D. C. I am communicating with you because it is my belief that I can be of service to you and your firm. For the last three years I have been involved in photography. In. fact I grew up around photography. Approximatly nine months ago I came acroes some articles on catadioptics or as they are better known mirror-telephoto optics. I became entranced by the problem of puttipg an adjustable aperture on such a lens. I have found a practicle way to adapt almost any rear-focus lens for this purpose and by special construction a front- focus modle could be made to use rqy system. My system is both simple and practicle and above all else it is workable. I am writing this letter because I am an Americant I was brought up to believe in our system of goverment and it't greatness. This letter so far might sound some what strange and tax your credulity, I assure you that I am right and that this letter is no joke. My idea is practicle, workable and follows all the laws of optics. I am a teenager and a high school student. I will be eighteen June 18, 1969, I have lived in 11 my life. I stand 5' 119 and weigh 222 pounds. Abou our years ago I was tested on the Stanford-Benet Inteligence Test, my score was 140. Our school ends June'10, 1966. The last week is for time only. If you have already found a method of placing an. aperture please let mw know. I believe in my idea and. if for some reason you can not use it I would hope to put it on the comercial market. So far I am the only one that knows how 'my idea works. I hope to hear from you soon.
