Approved For Release 20d2/08/21 : 61A RD3 011948001300070025-4 ISS/PIAG/CRB Monthly Status Report SMTARY 1 January - 31 January 1978 OSS REVIEWERS: See Attached Report 4.202 CRB Officers continued the survey of 128 cubic feet of TOP SECRET documents. During January they reviewed 15 cubic feet of these TOP SECRET records (boxes 53 through 67). Two CRB Officers continued to work part-time reviewing and sanitizing records which relate in some way to MKULTRA type activity. This activity consumed about 95 manhours during the month. A memorandum was prepared for NARS under the signature of Mr. AI/DDA, identifying those purport sheets, the car as and microfilm reels containing information on CIA predecessor organizations' personnel, cover, and activities which we were requesting be withheld from public access until they could be reviewed by us. Fol his letter, a team of two officers from the group spent 40 manhours at the Washington National Recor s Center reviewing the portion of the retired State records for the 1940-44 period which are known to contain references to the OSS. The records reviewed consisted of approximately 14,000 purport sheets bound in 35 volumes (400 sheets estimated per volume) plus seven inches (about 500) file cards covering the F_ 1 for the period in question. The review revealed the names of 75 OSS personnel, i.e., names of persons whom a reader could more or less positively associate with the OSS. Of these, 24 names were known to have been Approved For Release 2002/08/21 CIA-RDP93B01194RO01300070025-4 'Approved For Release 200 21 : tlAzRbP9 O1194R001300070025-4 25X1 certain countries and the U.S. If agreement is reached, it is hoped that these 20 names can be removed from the purport sheets and filing cards. We do not. intend to ask NARS to re-photo the microfilm reels covering these records. It is recognized that this poses a risk and contradiction but it is felt that this risk is outweighed by the expense to re-microfilm the entire.series of documents and by the fact that these records already have been in the public domain since 1958. There remains at NARS in retired State files, a little over one volume of about 450 purport sheets which 25X1 During the month Chief, Information Management and Planning Group IMPG), asked the Branch to review the proposed new HR II Systematic Declassification Review, and make any suggestions or comments. Members of the Branch made several comments and suggested some additions which were forwarded to C/IMPG. As of 1 January 1978, four members of CRB, including the Chief of the Branch, were transferred to RRB/DDA. Their work will continue much as before but they will now gradually be briefed on and begin working in the actual declassification of non-current DDO records.
