I T$>ti individual republics of the
nation control the research within their otk areas except in those few
.uscauces where there is vol'Tntary cooperatilon w ng scientists on a
natimal basis, as -for example, when it is agreed to do research in a
given field and there is an'agreement as to the methods to be followed
throughout the country. Generally, medical researcn is followed in
three serpents:
-
a. the universities, vhicp are the moss important
b. the non-university hospitals ~i
C. th QYlGl:l l ,,.DLi..4 Lluun w4ich are under the Acadeay

An important role in research is also played by the Institutes of
Hygiene, especially the central Institute in each republic. In Zagreb
the work of these Institutes is closet tied in with the School of
Public Health. the individual acientiat is
given a ;reut e or a-i onomy in e selection of his problems and
his methods.

Academy at Zagre!-.
Of these, (f) is by far the best a.nd (g) next best. (a) is the
best of the journals, as such. Not all of these publications
in the clinical fields than in the fundamental sciences.I
physicians are more effectively organized
into associations and thus have better facilities for report-
ing their researcJi efforts. There is no separate journal.
either in physiology or in biochemistry.
ractice.lly no Soviet medical pu w ons were
coming n o the country. There was LL good representation of
]uropear journals in the libraries and a tremendous interest
in TM journals. However, the shortage of dollars is felt
quite critically in this area and the possibilities of acquir-
ing US publications were severly limited.
The greatest weakness of medical practice in Yugoslavia is
the lack of an adequate number of physicians. Another weakness
may be the overcrowding in the medical schools and the impact
of eight years of war and turbulence.
The best available. review of research in the biological sciences
is contained in the program of the First Congress of Yugosla-
vian Bic logists, 12 - 15 July 1953. This report indicates not
only the direction of research but the individuals involved.

The possibilities of study abroad
har significantly increased Tact n er of better -trained
research scientists who axe?iatereated and anxious to keep
up contract with 0 medical bcience. The knowledge
of English and interest in t$ publications has been steadily
increasing Efforts arc being made to create research associa-
tions of pbyxiologists and bioclmmists and to establish a Yugo-
slav journal for the baasc medical sciences. These are. all
positive dovelopmnts. The biggest single problam and tbm
moat important one is the isiadequacy of salaries of the medical
resaarak: worker as cows, ed, with his colleagues in tile' prac-
ticing field.
