Approved For Ruse 2001/09/044 k,o-,9 )P87-01130R0 00120003-3 IEG-57/73 22 February 1973 SUBJECT : Cuban Missile Crisis Exhibit The following comments by visitors to the Cuban Missile Crisis Exhibit, Corridor D, Headquarters, 9 October 1972 - 16 February 1973,' are representative of those deposited in a box provided for the purpose. The ratio of complimentary remarks to derogatory re- marks is also representative of the overall comments on the exhibit. The consensus is that the exhibit was very well received and that both veteran and new employees would like to see--and take great pride in--more displays of this kind. The uncomplimentary remarks fall into two general categories: (1) those who prefer "extra-curricular" displays, and (2) those who felt that the Cuban exhibit was displayed for too long a time. ecu Imagery Exploitation Group, NPIC CLASSIFIED By -01317 _~----_-_ EM'7T FRO 11 GENERAL DECLASSIF IC I-GN SCH-*^i1LE OF E. 0. Excellent exhibit. Why can't the Agency send a display like this out into the real world? An intelligence triumph such as this should be shared with the taxpayers. Excellent display. Certainly better than amateur artists and craftsman exhibits. if declassified, this might be good public relations if given to LIFE, or NEWSWEEK. Superb::- A highly enlightening exhibit.. This should be opened to all of the public to see one small part of the government in action. Excellent. Wish more people could see it. This is the best exhibit I've seen in the corridor. More like it, please. This is without a doubt the best exhibit I pave ever seen shown here. Good show I should like to see more of this caliber. An exceptional display. Would like to see more like it. Outstanding exhibit. Thanks, this is very good. Excellent. If you can do this, why was the 25th anniversary one so absolutely crummy? Excellent; (American University associate) An excellent display::: Very interesting and factual. One of the best displays I have seen in two years in CIA. Very good. This really is great. Best exhibit yet--very effectively written and displayed. Thank you! Excellent Cuban exhibit. But why don't you put the comment box at the other end of the display? As one of the present OCI analysts on Cuba, I think this is a fantastic presentation. I would strongly recommend that the display be accessible to visitors during the family tours next month. Suggest this display be opened to Spouse Day visitors. Fantastic! An excellent exhibit. This exhibit is so good: Believe it should be incorporated into a brochure for distribution. By far the most interesting exhibit here ever. This. presentation is outstanding. I suggest it remain up for family. visitation day so that our families (especially)' our younger. people) . may appr, ecia.to the functions of C.IA.. better. In fact:, why not do the same with other intelligence events of note, and ":advertise" a few of our successes? Very interesting and informative., Good job. Very informative and well. done. An absolutely magnificent planned display. The photographs, detailed plans, and equipment is more informative than any ever seen at the Agency. Congratulations to all concerned. Very well done exhibit; pt-ioto tables especially interesting, but a fine job was done overall. A splendid exhibit! Why not show it at the Smithsonian? The public would surely be interested. Or is it not suf- ficiently declassified for that? I think this display would be of great interest to the public (if possible). A display at Tyson's Corners would really draw a crowd and put CIA in good licjht for a change. po1it,i..c.a1:.Note_--.I?..wonc er if? r;cG.ovi,r.n ever thinks.,. :b:opt, the., Having ha,e a minor role in the displayed affair, fine it roost ' n'teke`st: iig: '? This is a subject of great and lasting interest to all intelligence officers. Excellent--clear and understandable-- Excellent--Best yet! Excellent Exhibition. Excellent--place on exhibit outside Agency, Smithsonian for example. How about something different?! Change the exhibit hall display. I'm sick of looking at it. Let's get a new exhibit. This one has been here long enough! This is an interesting and informative display, but isn't it time for something new--perhaps related, e.g., Bay of Pigs? Isn't it about time to change the exhibit? What will be your sequel to the Cuban crisis? More lights? Sir: We should have a small antique show and sale or ex- r?:: Let's get back to the art. Who needs thi's kind of thing.? Colby's reply to me says "mold at least through January -- per DCI.'t A memorandum from DDS on the same subject says the DCI wants the exhibit continued "at least until February." (The DDSs memorandum also contains some commendatory comments. Therefore here's a copy.) I'm replying to DDS' memorandum by agreeing that yes, please consult the DCI again the latter part of January, and let me know so that I can let you know. The latter includes all family days, a visit from the Foreign Service Senior Seminar on 15 January, and the hotographic record of the exhibit that OTR plans to mate. However I took the precaution of checking whether the Executive Director has any special interest in continuing beyond the 20 January date, and he replied with a note saying, "Hold at least through January, per DCI." Meanwhile I also had received your memorandum. 2. I would be grateful if you will get the DCI's views in the latter part of January, as you offered, and let me know them. At the Morning Meeting on 13 December the Director expressed the desire that the Cuban Missile Crisis exhibit continue in the 1D corridor at headquarters at least until February 1973. He verified that others at the meeting agreed with this and received positive confirmation of the value of the exhibit in a wide range of liaison relationships. The Legislative Counsel has been particularly interested in showing the exhibit to the broad list of Members of Congress. 2. We will need to consult on when this exhibit is to be closed and I would propose to recheck the ultimate date with the Director at a Morning Meeting the latter part of January. 3. Moreover, OTR tells me, the 20 January date will give it time to make the photographic record that the DCI wanted. tells me the DCI wants the exhibit hung until 20 Janu care if it comes down thereafter. Thus I've tentatively set a 20 January termination date. This is to ask whether you have any interest in continuing the exhibition beyond 20 January. Otherwise we'll firm up that date.
