Giuliano Pajetta, a Communist federal deputy whose brother is one of the party's top figures, ap- pears to be in charge of the Italian effort. He was recently singled out for criticism by a Soviet party consultant for non-bloc affairs who charged that his work in Latin America was splitting the left and creating problems for the Soviets and Castro. Pajetta visited Peru last month for a meeting of the Inter- parliamentary Union and went on to Chile and other countries. Latin American Communist parties except the Mexican have supported the Soviet intervention and may be reluctant to change their position. The Italian Communist Party has been trying for some time to coordinate the opposition of a number of Communist parties to the Soviet action in Czech- oslovakia. They have worked closely with the French Communists and have consulted the Bulgarian and Hun- garian as well as the Rumanian, Yugoslav, British, Austrian, and Spanish parties. The Japanese Communist Party has sent represent- atives to Europe to discuss Czechoslovakia and Viet- nam at the invitation of the Italian and French Com- munist parties.
