Indonesia: Army investigators are still develop-
ing evidence complicating former president Sukarno in
the 1965 Communist coup attempt, and are also trying
to link him with the recent Communist uprising in
East Java. There is no firm indication, however,
that President Suharto plans to bring him to trial.
Sukarno has been effectively neutralized and a public
trial to denigrate him further would only serve to
complicate Suharto's problems by intensifying anti-
government sentiment. Sukarno was taken briefly to
Djakarta for questioning last week, but he has since
been allowed to return to his home, where he is ke t
under close surveillance. 25X1
