.Mexico: Several hundred students clashed with
securit'r y forces again last night in the capital,
and no end of the crisis is yet in sight.
At least one infantry battalion has been
brought into Mexico City from outside the federal
district, and the police forces have been more
heavily armed because of the increased violence.
A police commander announced that no public meetings
will be allowed anywhere in the city.
The students were unable to hold the large
demonstration that was tentatively scheduled for
last night and now plan their next mass march next
week. Sympathy strikes are in force in several
other areas of Mexico. The authorities have picked
up five of what the government considers the top
ten Communist strike leaders. Troops have report-
edly occupied two universities in the provinces.
the minister of government, Luis c everria,
made a forceful. statement on the government's read-
iness and willingness to prevent disruption of the

Ecuador-USSR: Financial problems and the lure
of a further increase in cash sales to the USSR may
lead President Velasco to accept a Soviet overture
for diplomatic relations. The approach, reportedly
made by the Soviet ambassador to Chile when he at-
tended Velasco's inauguration on 1 September, was
followed by an article in Pravda praising the new
President. Velasco had agreed to establish rela-
tions in 1945, during one of his previous terms,
but this time his answer was merel that "in en-
eral we are movin toward that."
