Indonesia., The army's drive against the PKI
continues unabated.

In Djakarta yesterday a rally--the largest in the
memory of the US Embassy staff--called for the pro-
scription of the Communists. A spokesman for Sukarno
who called for calm and temperance was heckled with
cries of "crush the PKI." Also yesterday, Defense
Minister Nasution issued a statement strongly critical
of the PKI and revealed that the army has asked Sukarno
that all those who "slandered" the army and its officers
be "tried as traitors. "
LAn authoritative army source has told the US Em-
bassy that despite the ostensible support offered by
Sukarno to Foreign Minister Subandrio and several pro-
Communist ministers at last Saturday's cabinet meeting,
the army is interpreting the President's remarks to
mean that these men are "dispensable" and will act ac-
cordingly I

he army is also pushing the anti-PKI drive in

North Sumatra. Removal of PKI members or sym-
pathizers from responsible or influential positions con-
tinues at all levels. The possibility is growing that the
dismissal of so many low-level PKI.adhererits-.will create
a pool of desperate men which the PKI can use for ter"
rorist activities.!

Phere are rumors that Sukarno plans to leave
the c6untry soon--possibly as early as Friday. If
true, Sukarno is probably leaving for medical reasons,
but it is possible he may wish to remain abroad while
the dust sinifles in Indonesia--a tactic he has used be-
f ore. I

*Laos: umors of an impending military shakeup
within the rightist military leadership are again circu-
lating. Key generals located outside of Vientiane are
concerned that Vientiane commander General Kouprasith
might attempt to take control of the military establish-
ment with the backing of the ambitious Sananikone clan.
Although there are no firm indications of such a move,
the recurrence of these rumors points up the long-
standing rivalries which continue to impede effective
unity among the non-Communist elements in T,aos~.
