Indonesia: 'he Indonesian Government is prepar-
ing to take over the operation of US oil companies as
the next step in its anti-American campaign0J
Top Indonesian leaders decided on 12 March to
take over management of the American-owned Caltex
and Standard Vacuum oil companies and a Dutch sub-
sidiary of the Shell Oil company "in the next few d s,"
according to Third Deputy Prime Minister Saleh.
IF2aleh told an Indonesian Caltex official that profit-
sharing agreements with the companies would continue
to be honored and that American employees could re-
main on the job. He suggested that the companies
could continue to export oil to their markets but that
if they did not do so the Soviet Union would help Indo-
nesia market its oil,
frith the take-over of American rubber estates
on 26 February, the oil companies became the last 25X1
substantial American business interests in Indonesia
and the next logical target for both Sukarno and the
Indonesian Communists. )
