Dear Dick:
Delighted to know that you can be with us for the
seminar on 18, 19 April.
We cannot firm up the agenda until we have all the
speakers but 'Id like you to take about 15 minutes to
summarize in capsule form the strategic assessment of
military risk in the Middle East.
We expect to have with us the economic minister of
Kuwait and a prominent Lebanese banker and members of the
press will be present. Itll get back to you with the agenda
as soon as possible and you can let me know your travel plans.
Anne and I look forward to your arrival.
Sincerely,

Dear George:
Many thanks for your kind letter of February 3. I very
much appreciate your invitation to participate in a seminar
there on the continuing oil crisis and the economic situation.
I am delighted to be able to accept (barring unforeseen crises).
I have last been to Columbus, Ohio, and talked there to some
500 business and professional men.
Don't worry about the tickets. I will probably drive down.
Laureen is probably going to Europe before then but thanks on
her behalf anyway. I would arrive Friday evening.
Your offer to accept my memorabilia is very interesting
and we can talk about it when I get there. About how long
would you want me to speak and what particular areas would
you want me to address?
With every good wish to Anne and you in which Laureen
joins,
Faithfully,
Vernon A. Walters

Dear Dick:
3 February 1975
For some time I have contemplated writing to ask you to
visit The Citadel and to discuss with me some of the plans
that I have for its growth and its manner of contribution to
our national purpose.
On the 19th and 20th of April (Saturday and Sunday), we
are now planning to have a seminar on the economic and security
impact of the continuing oil crisis and the economic position
of the country. It would be a most propitious time for you
and your sister to be our guests here at The Citadel and for
you to participate in the seminar that is to be hosted by
the governor and me. Although the planning is at this time
tentative I would expect to ask you to present a short state-
ment on some aspects of our national security posture to
those attending. We are intending to have approximately 350
leading business and professional men from all over the
Southeast as well as our state to attend. We are tentatively
planning on having Secretary Laird, Assistant Secretary
Ellsworth, Warren Nutter and several other key officials to
come down and give us an update on how things look on the
national and international scene. If you can circle these dates
on your calendar and indicate whether you can come, I will be
glad to send you and your sister first class tickets for
arrival on Friday, the 17th, and departure on Sunday afternoon
at about 5:30. It would be a great joy to Anne and me to have
you as our guests on the campus in Mark Clark Hall and have
you participate in this very meaningful seminar here.
Additionally I have talked to General Mark Clark about
including some of your memorabilia in our very fine museum

and archives building. Our collection is expanding and I
would be honored if you would consider The Citadel as your
official repository of any memorabilia that you want to
leave to posterity. We can discuss that in more detail
if you can come in April and show you the facilities that
we have.
Anne joins me in warm good wishes to you both.
