SUBJECT GI:~. Polygraph Program.
1. Thin memorandum is for the infarmatian of the Deputy
Director of Central Intelligence.
2. The Office of Security is. responsible for the conduct of
the polygraph program of CIA,
Begun in 1948, at the direction of the DPI, it soon reached the.
point in 1951 where all applicants for employment were given
polygraph examinations.
3. The fallowing categories. of personnel are polygraphed:
a:. All staff and staff-type applicants,. employees,
military and civilian personnel formally assigned from.
other agencies.

tested because. of unavailability, are in a pending status
or will not have access to highly sensitive material.
6. There are two major exceptions. to the above procedures:
a. No person with a serious.. physical or emotional
disability is polygraphed until the disability is corrected.
b. Girls. under 1$ years of age are cleared through
SECRET only and are not polygraphed. Eighteen year old
girls may volunteer to take the. test if a TOP SECRET
clearance is desired, All girls, however, are polygraphed
after their 19th birthday.
