Source thumbed through this manual for about 10 minutes at the classified documents section of the 83rd Heavy Machine Gun Battalion at Pakiya (N 42-12, IC 27-03) seeking general information because he wanted to Apply for and attend a course at the General Staff Academy in Sofia. 6 Permission to read the manual had to be obtained from the battalion's executive officer or battalion CO, and this manual could not be removed from the classified document section at any time. 50X1 This manual was published by the Ministry of National Defense in about 1952 and was printed by the Government Military Printing Office in Sofia; it was classified as "top secret". The manual was a bound edition with a dark green hard paper cover and measured about 10 x 14 cm; it had about 300 paw. 'Souroe did not notice any statements or dates in the contents which indicated that it had been translated from Soviet manual. Although the manual was classified "confidential", the company CO could permit EM to read the manual when it was necessary. Officers who wanted to read the manual had to sign for it at the classified ,documento section and could retain it for an indefinite period of time, some editions liwere bound and others which were stapled. the menus. as green, containing about 325 rough paper pages, and measuring about 8 x 12 cm. However, a later edition was published during 1950 and incorporated various changes in the 1948 version. Copies of the manual were issued to all officers down to platoon level. Interior Service Manual of the Bulgarian National Army (Ustav na Vutreshna Sluzhba na Bulgarskata Narodna Armia) It was published by the Ministry of National Defense and printed by the Government Military Printing Office in Sofia about 1948. However, a later edition was published during 1952. Disciplinary Manual of the Bulgarian National Army (Disciplinaren Ustav na Bulgarskata Marodna Armia) It was published by the Ministry of National Defense and printed about 1948 by the Government Military Printing Office in Sofia. However, an edition printed as late as 1952. This manual was unclassified, had either green or cream-colored covers, contained about 60 rough paper pages, and measured about 8 x 12 cm. It was issued to all officers and company orderly rooms and could be loaned to individual soldiers. Each company had several copies of both parts and norMally,the contents were read to a group of soldiers during instructional Periods. Part 1 contained about 125 pages and its contents included instructions on methods of computing windage and elevation for small arms, explana- tions on trajectories, the correct alignment of sights, and sighting- in procedures. Firing principles given in it were considered to be applicable to all small arms. According to instructions in the manual, recOrt:fire pract14,on the range (in the prone position at all ranges) consisted of firing two sighting rounds and four rounds for record at a silhouette target (head and shoulders), at 100 m, two sighting rounds and four rounds for record at a silhouette target (bead and body, E kneeling type) at 200 in, and two sighting rounds and four rounds for record at a-full-size silhouette target at 400 m. Sandbag rests could be utilized when record fire practice was considered to be defensive, rather than offensivesat which time sandbag rests were not permitted. Tripod-mounted machine gun record slow-fire practice was Conducted on rectangular-type targets measuring about 80 cm in length and 4-cm-high on which were printed 20 4-,cm black squares.
