In May 1951, excavation taking place on the southwest edge of Ashkhabad (N 37-57, Z 58-23) at the base Of a hill. The site was approximate4 50X1 1.5 kilometers south of Pervomayskaya ulitsa. The entire area is being excavated and an area enclosed by a.Ooodezitence within the barbed wire enclosure appeared 50X1 to be Undergoing excavation to a greater depth, the emeavation was being extended into the beep of the hill. ZIS-5 tracks were observed trans- porting sand and rock. 2. Most of the labor force was composed of prisoners from the Ashkhabad city jalloand Overall supervision of the project ins carried out by a military enitillseruni. Prisoners were transported to and from the area in trucks driven by military personnel. 3. The excavation site wae guarded by MVD guards 24 hours daily and was off limits to unauthorised persons. ()) Ashkhabad - capital of the Turkmen .SSR and the largest industrial center of this republic. ? (A) Pervomayskaya ulitaa - second largest street in Ashkhabad,. approximately eight meters wide, built of cobblestone. Individual guard towers were located around the area as indicated by blocks on sketch. (5) Barbed wire fence - approximately two meters high, enclosing.the entire excavation area which was approximately SOO x 500 meters. The north fence was on level ground. The south side fence was located on the slope of the mountain. (6) Area in which most of the excavating took place.
