Approved For Release 2004/11/29 : CIA-RDP77M00144R000500140061-8 SECRET 19 February 1975 MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD SUBJECT: Meeting, Tuesday, 18 February 1975; DCI, ex-Ambassador Edward Korry and Deputy Chief, LA Division Ex-Ambassador Edward Korry called on the Director to advise him that he was under contract to write a book dealing with Chile. His American publisher is McGraw-Hill and his British publisher is Secker & Warburg. He expects to complete the book by the spring of 1976. He said he had received permission from the Department of State to review the messages he had written while he was stationed in Chile; he will be doing this for the next 10 days. Ex--Ambassador Korry said that the purpose of the book would be to put recent developments in Chile in proper perspective. In the book he would point out that the events in Chile and U.S. involvement therein were part of the on-going conflict at the time between the U.S. and the USSR. Also, that the extraordinary impact the Chilean events have had in the United States represents the third leg of a three-legged stool, the other legs being Vietnam and Watergate. Were it not for these latter two events the Chilean story would not have had the impact it had. All this means to Korry the end of "the American century." In addition, the notoriety the Chilean story has received is a reflection of the conflict between the two major political parties in the U.S. Chile is merely one of the vehicles through-which this conflict has been carried on. Getting to the point of his visit, ex-Ambassador Korry said he needed. some help from us in writing the book. For example, he would like to see the Director's statement to the Intelligence Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee on 22 April 1974 which was made -available to Senator Harrington. He would also like to see the recent statement o 'rorm`er ec oItelms before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on 22 January 1975. He is interested in not only the public version but what might have been left out of this version. He is con- cerned that his book might be in conflict with or be undercut by these testimonies if he were not aware of their contents. He also mentioned E2 IMPDET CL BY SECRET 25X1 Approved For Release 2004/11/29 : CIA-RDP77M00144R000500140061-8
