Approved For Releas
27 December 1957
Mr. Allen W. Dulles
Director of Central Intelligence
2430 E. St NW
Washington 25, D.C.
Dear Ir. Dulles:
Mrs. - and I thank you for your letter
of sympathy.
I would like to have you know of some things
that have been our experience and that perhaps
you might not know of--in the way we do.
This has been our second experience in the
last six months. It is true that there is little
that others can do or say when an illness strikes
fast and fatally. But in both instances I had
help and kindness from our organization that was
much more than just an organization turning to.
There were people who made special efforts--some
who knew me personally and others who didn't--to
do everything in the realm of possibility to speed
our children to the best medical help and to re-
duce, where they could, other cares Mrs.
and I might have had but for their forethoug
and action.
There are three groups who pulled for us
and worked hard for us in both crise

selves much more than their official jobs would
require.
Your medical staff was, in every detail, ex-
traordinary. We were met, for example, at Idle-
wild by an Agency doctor who had flown up on two
hours notice to be on hand to take over from ex-
tremel distraught parents. Dr. and Dr.
I have met personally, but there were
o ers. . These officers made arrangements for im
mediate professional care, starting with that mo-
ment we landed in New York, that could not have

been improved upon. Your medical staff remained
in hourly contact and consultation with the
civilian specialists they had called in--so long
as there was anything anyone could do.
The Casualty Affairs people under Mr.
have expedited administrative papers
wl a courtesy and personal consideration that
makes the memory of that office, for me, much
more than just an office.
I thought you might like to know, Mr. Dulles,
that such personal consideration anti help--that
was the help of good people, acting as individuals
and not just as officials--Was what came to our
support. This is something rare, I think, that an
agency as large as ours is able to retain such
personal and kind solicitation for one man and his
family.
