MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
18 May 1955
At the lunch given today by Admiral Jerry Wright, John Hollister
was present and I had a brief chance to talk with him alone just as he
was leaving.
I told John Hollister that we had learned through the FBI that the
Clark Committee desired the FBI to check up on the security of a
series of persons whom they believed were now, or had once been,
CIA. employees. I told him that from the names appearing on the
list, many of which were familiar to us, we had every reason to
believe that they were furnished by some disgruntled ex-employees
or persons who had worked with us and had been terminated. I
told Mr. Hollister that we had no objection whatsoever to the FBI
making an investigation of these persons; I understood, however,
that this presented certain problems for the FBI; no charges had
been preferred against the persons and many of them were not in
government employ and there was no normal basis for carrying
through an investigation. I said I did not know definitely what the
FBI proposed to do, but I understood that Mr. Papich had discussed
the matter yesterday with General Clark. I told John Hollister I was
advising him of these facts because I wished it to be perfectly clear
on the record that we, ourselves, were not interposing difficulties,
but the difficulties, as such, were inherent in the situation. I said
that many of the persons on the list had not been employed by us for
years; there was one dead man on the list and one man whom we could
not identify as ever having worked for us.
John Hollister thanked me for the information and said he would
take note of it and speak to General Clark.
