SUBJECT: DCI Appearance Before the Senate Preparedness
Investigating Subcommittee, 6 October 1966
1. The Director, accompanied by Sidney Bearman,
and John S. Warner,
appeared before the Stennis Preparedness Investigating Sub-
committee on 6 October 1966. The hearing began at 2:30 p. m.
and lasted about three hours and fifteen minutes. Present from
the Subcommittee were:
John Stennis, Chairman
Henry M. Jackson
Howard W. Cannon
Strom Thurmond
James T. Kendall, Chief Counsel
Glenn A. Smith, Professional Staff Member
Stuart P. French, Professional Staff Member
Due to floor votes, the members did not sit continuously, and
consequently all missed parts of the briefing. There was a
technical sweep of the room and monitoring during the hearing.
It was held in Room 131, Senate side of the Capitol. Senator Stennis
commented on the absence of a transcript, and it was explained that
due to the high classification it had been agreed that the Director's
statement and memorandum for the record of the questions and
answers would be available on call to the Subcommittee. Senator
Stennis said this was agreeable but he felt it would be helpful if
the charts were also available.
