method for the raechanisms in question, gives a description of the
most common types of mechanism and deduces formulas for various fac-
tors required on design. All i*ormulas are given in a table with ex-

ABSTRACT: The dependence of the asphalt pipe coating
or. the thickness of the coating, the existence of
initial erosion and the magnitude of the potential
on the electrodes was studied on spherical electrodes
under constant and high humidity conditions. Most of the
experiments lasted more than a year and a half. It was
found, that the ductility of the coating dropped from
3 to 0, the penetration from 18 to 2.5 to 2, and the
softening temperature rose from 80 to go* to 112 to 124'.
In the vicinity of the coating the pH acidity of the soil
dropped from 8.5 to 7.4 which, supposedly, can be ex-

pla-tned by the interaction of the coating with the acid
soil or by the saponification of esters present in the
asphalt. At low electrode potential (in the order of 2 v)
the undammaged insulating coating completely peels off
after several weeks The two initial Insulation faul',-s,
measuring 4 to l6mm in area sharply speed up the
peeling process of the coating. At an electrode potential
of 1 v, the effect of polarization on the condition of the
coating is very slight Indeed. When the thickness of the
insulation Iz Increased, the peeling process slows down.
Decreased circuit resistance and higher current is the
sign of peeling. When the peeling Is complete, the current
drops. Hydrogen depolarization is the principal cause of
flaking. Tests have confirmed the hypothes-'s, that it is

necessary to increase the poteneltal on the pipe lines
and to compensenate for the contracted zone of pro-
tection by setting up intermediate cathode stations or
projectors as the properties of the coating deteriorate.
Data gathered from inspection of the Dashava-Kiev
gas main are given. In 1949 no evidence of aging or
deterioration was uncovered. Of 100 places inspected In
1952' 38 proved to have defective insulation (17 due to
plant roots). Low temperature caused the rest of the
damage. In 1954, of 24 places inspected in the course
of maintenance work only 17 per cent showed no insula-
tion-coating deterioration. Cases of natural coating -
aging were discovered. There was no noticeable change
in the physical and mechanical properties of the basic
mass of the coating.

ABSTRACT: It was established that chromium plating of pipes and rods of
Nimonec" tungsten-containing. alloys cannot be effected with the present plating
systems. A method was worked out, for continuously depositing strcngly adher;mt
cilrCrai=\4ePosits 50-60 =icrcna thick by cadbining chemical pickling and chrcra-
iurn plat&g in a self-regulating electrolyte (Fig. 1). The chromium plating
conditions are presented. The plating bath in G/1 consisted of chrcmic
anhydride 25Q, strontium sulfate 5. 5- 6. 5, and potassium fluosilicate 18- 20

ABSTRACT: Experiments have been made to Improve technology developed at the All-
.Union Scientific Research Institute of J'tpc* (VNITI) for vacuu-m diffusion coating of
carbon-steel tubes with chromium. St. 10 steel tubes 18--25 mm in diameter and
500--3000 mm long with a wall thickness of 1.5--2 mm were packed in chromium powder
of 1-2 mm particle size and held at 1100, 1120, and 1150C for 2, 4, 6, or 8 hr in a
vacuum of 5,10-1-5-10-6 mm Hg. The thickness of the chromized layer increased
linearly with Increasing exposure time and was 0.085, 0.160, 0.240, and 0.310 mm
after exposures of 2, 4, 6, and 8 hr, respectively. With an Identical exposure time,
the thickness of the coating on 0.10Z steel was four times that on 0.20% steel. The
chromium concentration decreased from 84.5 to 33.6% as the depth of the chromized

layer increased from 5 to 61 um. The coated tubes 25 x 1.8 mm were cold drawn to
20.5 x 2 mm. No cracking or peeling of the chromized layer was observed. The thick-
ness of the chromized layer increased. compared to the initial thickness, in pro-
portion to the increase in the thickness of the tube wall. The chromized tubes were
satisfactorily joined by expmeton,threado and flange Joints, and also by gas and

The authors made a three-year study of a delta-type tularemia site. Txodes
ticks Hyalomma Bcupense and H. marginatum were found on domestic animals and
the gamasid mites representing the families Laelaps, Ilyperlaelape, and Hypoasple
were discovered on small rodents. Results from the examination of water rats
as hosts for the gamasid, and their role in the interpidemic periods are still
inconclusive.
Bacterial Investigations by subcutaneous injections of a suspension of powdered

ABSTRACT: The paper was first presented at an extended conference of the Armenian
Anti-Plague Station on the "Prophylaxis of Highly-Dangerous Infections",
held from October 8 - 10, 1958. After reviewing the references in the
literature on the compound vaccination of animals against several in-
fectious diseases, the author lists his own results on the study of the
efficacy of the cutaneous method in immunizing guinea pigs with three
vaccines (plague, tularemia and brucellosis). The local reactions
pursued a much more benign course and ended sooner than In anlmaln
vaccinated &ubeutaneously. In no case an animal's general condition
was disturbed. A check on the Irmmmity 2 months after cutaneous
vaccination showed that the animals were resistant to massive Infectious

Immunized With a Mixture of the Three Corresponding Vaccines by the Cutaneous Method
doses of Brucella. There was no essential difference in guinea pigs
immunized with the associated vaccine and animals wh1oh received mono-
vaccine, as regards the number of animals Immune to plague and tula-
remia; there were more animals immune to brucellosis among the guinea
pigs immunized with associated vaccine, After 6 months the number of
animals which had lost their Immunity to massive doses of Past. pestis
and Past. tularensis was twice as great in the group immunized with
associated vaccine as In the group of animals which received mono-
vaccine. This did not apply to immunity to brucellosis. The question
as to whether this is a regular or only a random phenomenon requires
further study. This d.1sparity In the long-term effects of associated

TEXT: The authors describe their investigations of guiijea pigs whl,,I,. w-r-
found to be carriers of Pasteurella tularensis, although immune to the diseas-.
The animals remainded carriers for from 160-580 days. Bacteria were mostiy
from the lungs and, to a lesser extent, from the spleen and liver. AutopsN
lesions in the viscera, of which the most extensive lesions were found !r, *-ti, /
(hyperemia and thickening of various sections), Outward symptoms of the -d-,sea-ze
were found in only two guinea pigs. The small intestine was hyperemlized in
all cases. and in some cases the inguinal lymph nudes were swollen. A special
series of tests confirmed the hypothesis that a state of hypovitaminosis ;owe-
guinea pigs' resistance to tularemia.

waa found that: 1) Preexisting immunity to brucellosis
jn guinea pigs did not reduce the effectiveness of plague
and tularemia antigens administered in combination with
brucellosis antigen in a complex trivaccine. 2) Tularemia
immunogencais was identical with that produced by tularemia
monovaccine, while the immunogenic effect of the plague
'Vaccine was potentiated by preexisting immunity to bru-
cellosis. 3) The preexisting immunity to brucellosis
