SOV/110/58-7-3/21 AUTHOR: Fradkin, A.1-11., Enc,;ineer, and Petrenko, TITLE: Electrostatic 6pray-painting of electric motors (u,-ras.Li eieirtrodvigatelcy v elel-ti-ostaticleskom PERIODICAL: Vestnih El_el~tropromyshloiuiosti, 195E. Nr 7, pp 32-10 (USSR) ABSTRACT: This article describes a method of nairting electric motors in an electrostatic field. The paint is delivered to an atomisine head which is in the form of a cup. with 4-ts interior surface carefully polished. The ciir rotates at a sperd of 900 - 1500 r.p.m. on a hollow shaft throvgh whic!~-the paint is delivered. This atomising dE!Vice is maintained at high voltaie, so that tie droTs, of pairt leaving the end of the cuT; are highly charged: a general vi,~w of the installati-r. is giver-- in Fig ~"_ The Lmin components comprise a hiEh-voltare rectifier vrith current -limiting resistan(,e arvIL az~toraatic dis char irg devices. T.-.e pairtirg cb,amber ireasures 3-5 x 3.2 x 3 m and a conveyor passe, Card 1/4 through it. The arrant,~e.-.ert of the chainler is shovrn 4 in Fig 2; the motors, suspended from the conveyor, Spray-paintin.- of electric motors SOV/ 110- ~- 8-17-3/ 21 rotate at 6 - 7 r.p.m. and are painted uniformly. TI,e atoiaisers, as illuotrated in Fig 31 are r.-ounted on vertical insulators. The atomiser cups are ~Irivei. by a sLiall electric mc;tor. The paint meterirg d(-.,vi(.,, is illustrated diaLratmatically in Fig 4; connections to the ator-Asers are Liade by insulating polyvynyl cl-loride. tube. A voltage of' 100 IN is applied to the atoris(,rs. A smal]. extraction far. is insta2led in the raint ~-h- r."hor, primari",,- to rentow solvent vapours. The chaiTIer can handle LA motors an hour. The conveyor is des'cribel and illustrated in Figs I & 6. The paint is dried in 25 minutes by an infra-red lamp installation, i..,hich can also be seen in Fig 6. The control panel is descril~ed. Compressed-air aotmisers wer,~ tric(', and Card 2-/4 so was coi,-,Ijre3s(.~,-3-ziir-turbine- drive for the culs, but Spray-painting of electric motors SOV/110-58-7-3/21 electric motor drive was found best. The process ensures that most of the paint Js applied to the motors and a mist of paint is not formed. EXIternal. su~rfaces of motors are uniformly painte(l, but ~,iddcn internal- surfaces are not touched and may reauire painting by a brusl, on the conveyor after leaving tte electrostatic field. It is important that the dista.'--ce between the 'itomiser and the pro~2uct should not vary too greatly. If the .Iistance becomes too small, flashover n:ay occur and if it is too -,reat the riethod is not so effective. When bituminous paint 462P is used there is no risk of fire or explosion any more than in ordinar: paint chaiabers, and no special precaution is necessary. Explosive mixtures cannot form in the chamler and the paint does not burn if a flashover occurs provide6 that its pouler is properly limited. The process is used at the Kha?kov Electro- mechanical worlds for various types of explosion-proof Card 3/4 motors, thegeneralla-yout of the eauipipent being, Spray-paintir-C of electric mo'.ors SOV/11 0 - r t'~ - ~'- 3/21 illustr.-Ited (Iiagrimmatically in Fig 7 and briefly described. It is concluded that the rzin advantage of the 1--ethod is the economy of paint, cons umpt ion of uhich was cut b1,, half. The process is autoi:iattic, outpU is high and iinnual labour is practically Card 4/4 elirfiinatecl .There are '7 figures. snbi.aTTED: February 27, 19'/E. I. Paint sprayers--Design 2.
