This work provides a useful set of tools to assist in arriving at a choice of projective and non-projective transformation parameters that wrill yield an alignment chart, for an equation of third nomographic ordei, that is reasonably near optimum for given ranges of the variables. The tools consist of 25 accurately constructed nomogtams '(skeletons) for the equation 16 of them for its representation by a conic and straight line and 7 for its TPPMent-atioU on a cubic. It is automatic, program controlled, and performs 29 different arithmetical and logical operations with a separate 11command" for each. The sequence of the commands makes the program. In its principle tho "Ural" is a typical automatic electronic system. It includes 800 electron-tubes and 3,000 semiconductor elements. The program and the numeri- cal information for calculations are perforated in a movie film. The part of numerical matter and program working at a given moment is recorded on a magnetic drum, the memory unit. The calculated figures are recorded on the same drum. The part of progTam and numerical matter needed in the following operations is trans- ferred to a magnetic storage tape, and at the corrbsp6nding command it is again rewritten on the drum. The results and the check digits are either printed on paper tape or perforated in a movie film. [Abstractor's Note: No further design Card 1/3 88224 S/031/60/000/010/004/005 The Universal Computer "Ural" A161/Ao26 details are given, and no diagrams included]. The machine permits calculations with.ded'imal nine-digitI,numbers, i.e., the numbers can be put in and out in this form, but the computations in the machine proceed in Pinary system. The speed is one hundred calculations per second. The "Ural" has been installed and started by a team'of,Laboratory engineers headed by the Senior Engineer of the computer, M.T. Kozhayevv The team had been trained at the producer plant. The computer is uni- versal in the sense that it can solve any mathematical problem provided that the numberical calculation method is-known. Difficulties can only be caused by its comparatively slow speed in case a very high number of operations Is needed '. About 100 - 200 million operations are the top limit for one problem, i.e., higher number of operations Is also possible but it would take a long time and could not be programmed without difficulties. The computer will be used for various covTu- tations; for the Academy institutes. At present it does trial calculations for the Astrofizicheskiy institut (Astrophysics Institute) and Institut ~adernoy fizi- ki (Institute of ftelear Physics). Computations are being prepared for studies of power cyclone process ("energotsiklomyy protsess") at the Institut energetiki (Institute of Power Engineering)., It will take some time before the mathemati- ci;wR will waster the programming and the engineers the computer operation. it is mentioned that after the arrival of the "Ural" the future computing center of the Academy already can solve a rather wide tange if computation problems. The Card 2/3 88224 S/031/60/000/010/004/005 The Universal Computer "Ural" A16l/AO26 ta~iatory, also has a set of -analytic computers, an electronic 38 -80 (EV-W) computer and an analog computer OnT -5 (IPT-5). A population of 1,600,000 people lives within the regions affect- ed 6y endemic goitre. Six large endemic regions are recognized geographically. They are situated around the high mountains in the country, The valley and C'oastal regions are not affected, with the exception of a few small foci and isolated endemic centres. The wide-spread endemic goitre makes preventive and therapeut- ic measures absolutely necessary: mass and group iodine prophylixis as well as extension and improvement of the quality of treatment.
