were conducted in a vacuum of 5-10-5 mm Hg*. The F - Z dependence curve
has a maximum at Z - 30~,- For annealed ?e, L 0-10- 5 cm2/sec. D diminishes
-as Z rises, and for Z = 507'0' it drops to D-._10-0 cm2/sec. A linear
de-aendence between log D and 1/T was found for annealed Fe from -75 to

of Centrifugally-cast CuSn8 Tin"IBronzes

ABSTRACT: Difficulties are encountered in shaping tin bronzes
containing over 70% Sn.i Wire from such material is made
by centrifugal castine of discs of about 6oo mm dia and
20 mm thick, machining both faces of these discs, cold-
rolling the discs down to a thickness of 6-8 mm and
cutting the discs spirally by means of a special machine
to a strip of rectangular cross-section and, finally,
drawing it to the desired wire shape by conventional
methods. Pickling of such centrifugally-cast discs in
concentrated nitric acid reveals a stratified structure
similar to that of timber. Material with such a structure
causes difficulties during rolling and drawing;
particularly, cracking occurs of cold-shaped discs during
recrystallisation annealing and there is a considerable
non-uniformity in the physical and mechanical properties
Cardl/4 of the final product (wire of 0.1 mm dia). There was

reason to believe that the non-uniform resistance to the
effects of concentrated HNO3 is due to the same cause as the
non-uniformities in all the other physical and mechanical
properties. The author concentrated his efforts on
determining the origin and the causes of the stratification
and also on determining suitable measures for eliminating
these. The photos reproduced in Figure 1 show the
stratification revealed by etching. A photo of the
equipment used for, X-ray diffraction study of the strati-
fication and for I~omogenisation of tin bronzes is
reproduced in Figure 3. A sketch, Figure 4, shows the
locations chosen for making X-ray diffraction patterns.
Graphs of the influence of annealing on the fluctuation
of the tin content in the cross-section of a few layers
on the surface of a Centrifugally-cast CuSn8 disc are
reproduced in Figure 5 for; a specimen (Nr 5) with 0widely
spaced stratification, annealed for 4 hours at 600 C;

the same specimen - after annealing for 16 hours at
6oo 0C;o the same specimen - after annealing for 64 hours
at 600 C; a specimen (Nr 6) with a closely 0spaced
stratification annealed for 64 hours at 600 C. X-ray
diffraction patterns are reproduced in Figure 7, which
show the influence of stratification on the process of
homogenisation - Che X-ray diffractlon patt-arna
reproduced in Figure 8 show the influence of the tempera-
ture on the speed of homogenizing. It has been proved ,y
that the stratification which is detected by chemical
etching of these tin bx~onzes is caused by cyclic fluctuation
