TITLE: A survey of computation methods of technicalabsorption
equilibria

TEXT: The authors critically discuss several methods of computing
inter-phase equilibria, proposed by various authors. One of the basic prob-
lems of chemical engineering is the determination of inter-phase equilibria
between gas and liquid. There are several methods described in literature,
concerning the conditions.under which the temperature of the system is lower
than the critical temperature of its gaseous component. If, however, the
temperature of the system is higher than the critical one, which is usually
the case in absorption systems, the calculation of the equilibrium is com-
plicated and difficult. Some information on.this subject can be found in
various manuals, but it is superficial and often inaccurate. Usually all
methods refer to the Henry-Is Law, but without indicating the conditions of

application or calculation of the Henry's Constant for the specified system.
Most accurate information on this subject can be found in the paper publish-
ed by Markham and Kobe (Ref. 10: A. E. Markham, K. A. Kobe, Chem. Rev., 28,
5199 1941). Further, the authors discuss a) the applicability of Henry's
Law, b) the calculation of equilibria from physico-chemical data concerning
the components, c) the method of extrapolating the equilibrium to different
pressure and temperature conditions, d) the solubility of gas mixtures, e)
the solubility of gases in solutions, and f) the calculation of equilibria
in case of non-isothermic absorption. The authors conclude their article
by presenting following practical example of calculations The mixture of
methane and air is in equilibrium with liquid benzene. The overall pressure
P = 2 atm, temperature 250C, partial pressure of methane pm = 0.4 atm. The.
task is to calculate the unit content of methane in gaseous phase and equi-
librium unit content of methane in liquid phase.- There are 4 tables, 1 fig-
ure and 39 references: 10 Soviet-bloc and 29 non-Soviet-bloc. The four
most recent references to English-language publications read as follows:

ABSTRACT: An investigation was made of stimulated Raman ,?.a nzene

in the dispersion resonator (see Fig. 1) of a ruby laser.'; In a resonator with two
heavy flint glass prisms, the angular separation of the ruby emission and the Raman
scattering at a frequency of 992 cm71 reached 20. The transmittivity of the mirrors
was approximately 5%. A container 15 cm long with glass windows was filled with
'pure benzene. Q-switching was achieved by using 10-mm-thick KS-18 glass in the
resonator. The ruby radiation consisted of a series of separate pulses, each with an
averageIpower close to 10 kwatt/cm2 and a length of 500 nsec, with pump level 30%
above, threshold. Intensive stimulated Raman scatlaring was observed in the disperidm
resonator during ruby generation exceeding the threshold by 10-20%. It should be
noted that SRS was observed when mirror 3 was unaligned and even when it was absent.

vessel and its'windows and is always perpendicular to mirror 2. When the ruby gener-
ation threshold was exceeded by 30% the efficiency of the transformation of rubk

ments. Good results are obtained only in the absence

method (plehysmography, motor-verbal method, and associa-

on indicators which can be used for the evaluation of
the different aspects of higher nervous action. Illus-
trations are given as well as physiological treatment
of curves. In spite of some schematic treatment, the com-
bination of these three methods permits a modicum of
evaluation of subcortical differentiation of the first
and second signal systems of the cortex.

Description -and dimensions of the ship, history of the wreck, re-
cords of the pogtion of the wreck - 32 tn. below sea level, covered by
a 14 m. layer- of loamy and. clayey ground. It was found that the force
Tequired to raise the ship was in the vicinity bf IIOGG tons. The centre
of v
gra Ity co-ordinates were determined for the length and height of
the wreck. The Initial scheme for ralsing the wreck proposed the use
of 32 pontoons of total effective load displacement of 7500 tons, and
emptying air-light storing rooms. New expansion tables were used for
divers working at an average depth of 36 m Wng these. tables, over
10OWdives were made. Rationallsed,methodg, initiated by the crews
of the ships ,Smak" and ,Swlatowld" which took part In.salvage ope-
rations, were applied to digging out the wreck and cutting the decks.
Ilistoty of three ralsing operations on ,Seeburg" attempted tn 1953.
Addition of 11 rxintoons (total Joad displacement Increased to 12910 tons),
and successful ralhing of the wreck on the Oth June of 1954.
