ABSTRACT: The number and distribution of the epicentres and the force of the Caucasian earthquakeB have been studied in relative detail. However,. the mechanism of these earth- quakes has been studied very little in spite of the fact that knowledge of this mechanism is particularly important in the analysis of the relations between seismicity and tectonics. To establish a relation between the seismicity and the tectonics means to seek those structures, the existence or development of which cause seismicity. For the purpose of determining the dynamic characteristics of the foci of Caucasian earthquakes the authors determined the dynamic parameters of all the (about fifty) earthquakes which were adequately recorded between 1951 and 1954. The cardi/4 theoretical basis and the general method of interpretation of the observations have been described in earlier work of M 49-3-2/16 On the dynamic characteristics of the foci of earthquakes in Caucasia. (cont.) Vvedenskaya, A.V (1) Key-lis-Borok, V.I. (2-4) and Malinovskaya, L.k- (53. This method, proposed by Keylis- Borok has been applied in various regions of the Soviet Union but its direct application is inadvisable under the conditions pertaining in Caucasia. In this paper the theoretical scheme of the foci of Caucasia, a dipole with a moment, has been experimentally determined aud the accuracy of the interpretation evaluated. The general properties of the dislocations in the foci of each zone are described and a preliminary comparison is made of these properties with the tectonic characteristics. The investi- gations include earthquakes in the Shemakhinsk, Akhalkalaksk, Dagestan and Prikazbekek zones. The results of the inter- pretation are summarised thus: the authors have succeeded in determining the dynamic parameters of the foci solely for six earthquakes of this region. For the other earth- quakes the recordings were too weak due to inadequate sensitivity of the instruments. However, the an&ular coordinate of the station relative to the hypocentre have Caxd 2/4 been determined very accurately. The epicentres of the studied earthquakes stretch from east to west and the time 49-3-2/16 On the dynamic characteristics of the foci of earthquakes in Caucasia. (Cont.) sequence of the successi,%re earthquakes is of interest. These earthquakes followed each other with time iirtlervals of 41 4.5 and 1.5 months. The results of the interDretation are entered in a chart, Fig.13, p.297 and also in the stereographic projection of the fracture planes and the directions of displacement, Fig.14, p.298. Fig.15 gives diagrammatically the distribution of the epicentres indicating the direction of displacements. It can be seen from Fig,14 that all the foci are linked with relatively sharp faults and reverse faults which in some cases have a considerable transverse thrust component. A gradual turning of the fracture planes from north to east was observed; the orientatiOlL Of three individual foci proved coincident. Absence of accurate data on the depth of the foci and the excessively small number of available results of numerical evaluation of earthquakes allow only prelimin- ary conclusions. However, the general picture is quite clear, in the foci near Kazbeg the faults are along a deep fracture whilst further east they shift into less deeper Cazd 3/4 structures; Fig-15 shows clearly the step-wise character of the rise in level. 49~3-2/:L6 On the dynamic characteristics of -the foci of earthquakes in Caucasia. Soobshcheniya, v. 44, no. 3, 1966, 571-578 TOPIC TAGS: seismic .ity, earthquake, earth crust/Dzhavakhetsk highland ABSTRACT: ifaj6r centers of seismic activity in the bzqavakhetskoye highland region are delineated on the basis of data obtafried during~the past 15 years on. the epicenters of over 3000 earthquakes. Analysis of data shows only the presence of separate clusters or concentrations of epicenters and the absence of any major zones of seismic.activity. Seismic data sup- port the earlier conclusion made on the basis of geological and gravity data to the effect that the meri, dional subcrustal faults of the region are fragmented and lack continuity, Analysis of the Madatapskoye earth- quake of 8 Feb 1959 suggests that two faulta intersect in the central part of the Dzhavakhetskoye range at an angle of 50-70%.,accounting for Card ACC NR: AP7001561 the high number of seismic tramors in the area. The general conclusion is made that the regions of concentration of critichl stresses are located'about 5-10 km away from the main axis of the range, formipg a_..: zone of echelon-like meridional faults. Gruz. politekhn. in-ta, 1954, Nr 34, pp 11-18 ABSTRACT: The author examines three cases of the design calculation of a closed- circuit differential mechanism which contains a continuous ly- variable speed modifier: 1) For a given continuous ly-variable speed modifier the number of teeth of the differential portion of the mechanism is to be calculated to cover the prescribed *range of speed control of the driven link; Z) given both the continuous ly- variable speed modifier and the differential mechanism, the number of teeth of the permanent transmissions to the driving links of the differential mechanism is to be determined for the prescribed range of speeds of the driven link; 3) given the differential mechanism, the speed-variation range of the continuous 1y- variable speed modifier is to be determined for the prescribed range of speed control of the driven link.
