Theoretical fundamen- I tale of the calibration derived from various published sources are tiet forth. An e7perimental calibrating outfit (see Enclosure 1) was built ii.nd te,sted. The solution to this problem is connected with the theoretical correction for the disc displacement by particles of the medium. A correction devised by L.V.King Olof.3: Proc. Roy. Soc. 153, 17-40 1935) gives conditions for optimum disc sensitivity when Poa/ Plt = 0.62, where p0 and 1) are densities of the medium and disc material respectivelyl a is disc radius and t disc thickness. This correction hao not been confirmed by experimental data. A more successful improvement has been made by A.B.Wood (Ref.5: Proc. Phys. Sec. 47, T79-793, 1935)- In the present paper, the authors try to define disc sensitivity Card I/$ S/589/60/o 645/003/003 Optimal conditions in Rayleigh ... 9195/E4115 more precisely. The established formula for the angle of rotation w (expressed in terms of torsional conatant D) is combined with Wood's correction to obtain an oxpreii.sion for disc sensitivity (where o/v2) (2) 12 3 D X 3-6 where x ,a/f2It. (3) the term in the last bracket can be neglected in viitw of the relative insignificance of the logarithmic decrement. 6. The author now formulates a new approach to the problem of disc design.
