It is directly demonstrated that the inhibition of differentiation is an active pheno-
menon localized at the cortical end or the analysor in question. In an experiment
with a stereotype of conditioned respiratory reflexes or polypnoea, a reduction of
the frequency of respiration was noted in the post-action of the negative condition-
ed stimulus; this did not occur during the action itseir or after application of the
positive conditioned stimulus only. Large doses (0.5 g.) of caffeine reduced the
intensity of the inhibition and very large doses(7-10 g.) of bromide concentrated
and reinforced the inhibition and abolished the phenomenon; this occurred also in
cases of spontaneous decrease of the inhibition. The bradypnota was greatly en-
hanced during the post-action of a differential stimulus applied in place of the
positive conditioned stimulus. No modification of the positive conditioned reflexes
occurred when a positive stimulus was applied immediately after the differential
stimulus. These findings are ascribed to an inhibition of differentiation produced
in the analysor by the negative conditioned stimulus: when its intensity diminishes
the irradiation of the process of inhibition produces the phenomena of the period of
post-action of the differential stimulus. It is not possible to determine by this
method whether the irradiation is produced directly by subcortical structures or
by the cortical representation of the respiratory centre. Graur - Bucharest

Abstract In one chamber a stereotype of conditioned salivary re-

In continuation of previous work, the interrelationships between the cortex and
the reticular substance have now been studied with the aid of chlorpromazine, which
blocks the latter. Two conditioned- reflex stereotypes have been elaborated in 7
dogs, one animal being kept in the salivary-reflex room (Low cortical tone) and the
others allowed free motor activity (high cortical tone). After adrn inist ration of the
drug in various types of experiments it was found that increase of cortical tone

In the preceding issue of the above-named journal (1957, 4. 336), a report was
given of the authors, experiments in 2 dogs, which showed that 'Ahen two points on
different hemispheres of the cortex are electrically stimulated. a temporary con-
nection between these points is established in the animal with a dissected corpus
ca.l.losurn as well as in the animal with an intact corpus callosum. The present
article deals with the results of macroscopical and microscopical examination of
the brains of the two dogs, showing that the corpus callosum had been completely
dissected, both in anteroposterior direction and in the frontal plane.

In a dog having the strong variant of the weak type of nervous system. attempts to
elaborate a salivary reflex to a stimulus of moderate intensity failed (because the
stimulus disturbed the stereotype), whereas such an attempt succeeded e6ally in

the free-activity chamber. When the animal was put back in the salivary-reflex
chamber. the same stimulus no longer disturbed the stereotype at conditioned re-
flexes or the animal's behaviour. Then the reflex to this stimulus was extinguished.
by non-reinforcement. in the free-activity chamber, and when the dog was returned
to the salivary-renex chamber again the stimulus now disturbed the entire stereo-
type. It is concluded that free motor activity Increases the capacity for conditioned-
�,,.Zflex activity, both generalized and localized to an isolated excitatory process.

TEXT: A photoelectric apparatus was used to determine the hayleigh con-
stants and the depolarization factors in the binary mixture.,s benzene-methyl al-
cohol and benzene-dioxane in various concentrations. The role of coherent (due
to fluctuations of concentration quid density) ~Lnd incoherent (due to fluctua-
tions of anisotropy) light scattering components is shown. The confrontation of
experimental data with theoretical predictions shows satisfactory agreement
,when allowing for the change of the refractive index as a function of concen-
tration and denz;ity in elementary volumes, considered in the scattering theory,
~o be identical-Niththe change in the macroscopic value of tKe refractive index.

severe experimental hemorragic shock was followed by death, intra-aortic
administration prevented death and, when combined with ackninistration of
a ganglioplegic(hexomethronium)it stabilized blood pressure most impres-
sively. The role Of hexomethronima is to mobilize capillary blood, of epi-
nephrine to relax splanchnic vein valves, increasing effective blood Vol-

All the laryngeal muscles of 10 individuals were examined, mostly by ffielschows-
ky's method. Myeloid nerve fibres showed differences In calibre and retained their
calibre until their transition into a terminal apparatus. Amyeloid nerve fibres were
thin. and are probably vegetative. The observed myoreceptors showed considerable
variety. Three rrain groups are described in accordance with a classification,
similar to Dogel's classification of eye muscles based on their localization: (1)
myoreceptors which show a direct connection with the muscle fibras, (2) Interstitial
receptors without such direct connection and (3) receptors In the tendons. Most
characteristic of the laryngeal muscles and of the m.vocalis in particular are the
myoreceptors with pear-shaped ends: single. unbranchad. and - more frequently -
branched types. in all myoreceptors of the first group, the nerve-endings were st-

tuated eptlemmally. i.e. on the sarcolemma. and not below it. The laryngeal
musculature, especially them. arytenotdeus, !a abundantly supplied with recep-
.tor-nerve apparatus.
