Abstract To decrease the effect of excess HC1 and NaN02 on sensiti-
vity of detection of Sb as SbCIZ by means of dyes of di-
and tripheny1methane series, it is recommended to dissolve
the resulting compound in organic solvents. Compound of
Crystal Violet with SbC16 ion passes readily into benzene
and its homologues, imparting to them a blue-violet colo-
ration. On usin6 derivatives of diamino-triphenylnethane
(Malachite Green and Brilliant Green) more reliable re-
Card 1/2 sults are obtained. To I ml of the solution under study,

containing Sb as Sb3+, are added 3 ml 5 N HC1, 2 drops 5%
solution NaNO and 0.2 ml of 0.5% solution of Brilliant
Green in ulco?ol (diluted with water In the proportion 1:3).
Tb the resulting orange-yellov solution is added 1 ml of
toluene. In the presence of Sb the toluene acquires a
green coloration the intensity t*f which increases with con-
centration of Sb. Detectable minimum is 0-05 (~ Sb. An a-
nalogDus reaction with Brilliant Green is produced by
AuCl and TlC'3, wbich interact as AuC_14 and TICI~. Detec-
taO minim are 0.5\ Au and 2 , Tl. Auramine mkeG it
possible to detect Sb in the pre'sence of Au and Tl, but the
reaction is not sufficiently sensitive (detectable minimum
5 ~ Sb).

Abstract in patients vAth intero-neurasthenic syndrome, who
had been blind-fol3ad, the condit-funed reflex (CR)
was developed by means of pressure of the leg on a
pedal in response to verbal instruction when at first
a wooden ball with a diameter of 45 cm was placed in
the hand and then a differentiation with a ball of 42
41 m. The stress stimulus (SS) - a ball of 100 mm -
produced CR, but when it was followed by the ball of
45 cen CR did not occur. After 12 - 25 minutes the

reactions were restored (normally after 2 - 3 minutes).
SS - ball of 18 mm - did not evoke CR, but the ball
of 42 ma 2 - 3 minutes after SS provoked CR (normally
immediately after SS). Then 2 balis were presented at
the same time -- 40 m, to the right and 66 mm to the
left, and the subjects were requested to press the
pedal on the side of the larger ball. After a number
of combinations 2 balls of 40 :n were presented.
With this CR appeared on the right in soiae of the sub-
Jects. ? - 5 minutes after SS - the ball of 18 rm -
presentation of 2 balls of 40 mm induced CR on the
left. The indices were normalized as a result of the
therapy. - M.I. Lisina

Study of the oxidation of alkalicellulose in the presence of retarding and

Wide mrkedly retarded the activity while the sulfide alone produced
a less marked effect. The retardation in this case was actually preceded
by an acceleration In the firtt moment of the reaction. Noted similar
retarding effects for sodium sulfite and sodium sulfide in viscose.

TEXT: Most authors consider that the oxidation of carbon in the open-heart
bath Is limited by diffusion links, but some point out that it may also be limit-.
ed by heterogeneous chemical reactions on the boundaries gas-slag, slag-metal and
metal-bubbles. The question of in what region the process takes place, diffusion
(limitation by diffusion links) or kinetic (chemical links) can be answered by
determining the effect of the temperature on the speed of the process. With rel-
atively slow chemical reactions the process rate will change with temperat.'u're in
accordance with the Arrenius equation E

he process is in the kinetic region if the activation energy va'ue is high (>
50,000 cal/mol), and in the diffusion region it it is relativeiy low (>3(),0w
0'31/mcl). The authors studied over 400 heats in 380 and 190-ton open-hearth fur.-
naces firing mixed coke and generator gas; temperature was measured by means of
a submerged platinumrhodium-platinum thermocouple. Over 1,200 carbon oxidaticn
rate values were determined (vn) at different temperatures (tt4) and C c,,,nter-t In
metal. The relations shown were verified by mathematical st'atistic methods. The
effect of the C content in metal, of the specific surface area of the slag-metal
and the quantity of oxygen was also studied. The resulLe are lllustra'rr

ed by diagrams (Figs. 1, 2, 3). The low activatien energy proves that the prcc-
ess Is in the dIffusion region. Low activation energy values In the steel. de-
(.arbonization process had also been obtained in laboratory experiments by S.I.
Filippov (Ref. 1) and in shop experiments by P. Vallet (Ref. 7, Iron and 3teel,
1955, No. 11). Conclusions: 1) The carbon burning rate does not depend on the
,-arbon content in metal if % C>0.3%. 2) The effect of' the temperature of the
metal. on the carbon burning rate is net strong at superheating above the liquidu-z
point (> 200) and corresponds with the apparent a,,tl-vation energy of the decar-
bonization process amounting to 15,000 - 22,000 cal/ mol. This means that the
process takes place in the diffusion range. 3) The decarb.:-nlzatlon rate depends
on the intensity of oxygen feed into the bath and is not. limited by any of the
heterogeneous reactions on the boundary's gas-slag, slag-metal and metal-bubbleS.
