Gleisdorf and F1 ratenfeld. Slope of road about 2u%.
Paved with granite blocks. "oad about 30 feet wide.
Little cr no chance for off the road movement due to
lack of space along highway. 11:30 AM; cool, with fire
drizzle
2. intersection of road No. 65 and others at St. Leonhard,
suburb of Graz. Motorcyclist at left is travelling along
road No. 65, which continues on at right of picture.

3. Looking along road No. 65 as it proceeds into built up
section of Graz. Road about 35 feet wide, macadam eurface,
,.granite curbing about 6 inches high, gutters of granite
paging blocks, and sidewalks ad jacecut to builuui gs aye of
macadam, being about 15 feet wide. The street is well lighted
by overhead lamps every 100 feet or so. "ouses lining street
are typical of all larger cities of Austria, beirg 2 to 4
stories high, having large basements, havi;,g walls 3 to 4
feet thick, and having a central coubtyard. 'here are
usually 3 to 4 families living on each floor. 12 noon.

on the railway 10 to 12 kilometers *outhvest of Laibach
(Ljubljana). Here the soils are damp as the w,.tcr tatle
is quite high owing to poor drainaze. Flo; ding occurs espe-
cially winter.

used bridge that crossed valley, but as this was destroyed
during the war, the double tracked railway tkkes -longer
route around side of valley. along this section, there are
few gentle slopes, and tue railroad utilizes .nany cuts and
fills.

adjacent to railway. This location about 5 minutes pouth
of Logatec. Limestone mountains are only partially covered
with thin stands of pines, and much of the surface is bare

May 2,1954 51. Looking east on,road to Celle, just east of Lukovica.
Road is of gravel on crushed limestone , is about 20 feet
wide and winds considerably. Is said to stay dry in rainy
weather.
52. Looking in opposite direction, to the west from point
from which picture no. 51 was made. hoad is under construc-
tion and should be finished this year ( 1954). The terrain
here is fairly rough and this road is the only one possible
throu3h% this part of the country

way acid a road utilizing the pass. x he railway runs on
the em4ankaant at the ri=ht of the picture. On the Austrian
side of the border, in addition to the two or three men
police and customs officials-- taking care of the frontier,
there was several hundred yards away a barracks housing a
contingent. . of; the so-called state police. On the Yugoslav
side, there were visible quite a number of troops, and it
was said that: all along th border there were border patrols
roughly one-half hour apart.

64. Typical road conditions along road leading/to Loibl
Pass. Elsewhere, the road is walled by steep cliffs, or
clings the side of a nearly perpendicular mountain side.
ULring the war, movement of vehicles over this road was
effectively hampered by partisan fighters who took advan-
tage of tree rugged forested terrain.
