TEXT: In accordance.with the program of IGY, the temperture of excitation
of OH molecules was determined from the intensity distribution in the rotation
bands (6. 1) and (9.3) of the night sky glow spectrum. The observations were
carried out In the vicinity of Alma-Ata at an altitude of 1,400 m. To obtain the
spectra, the diffraction spectrograph CR-48 (SP-48) was used. For standardizing
the spectra, a phosphor of constant action was used. The distribution of energy
in the spectrum in absolute units was obtained by comparison with the phosphor.
For six nights of observations, the Intensity was determined of all components of
the bands (6. 1) and (9.3) In absolute units, and for ' two nights of observations

The Determination of Temperature of the Upper Atmosphere From Rotation Bands of

ties of the lines were determined by integration of the contour. The results of
determination of the excitation temperature of the rotatIcn bands showed that the

ABSTRACT: This article investigates thecalculation of statically indeterminate
frames of minimum weight, taking into account the longitudinal forces. The solu-
of-the problem is carried out in the elastic region. It is found that the
greatest stresses will be obtained in the fiber if the cross eection has a symmet-
ric form. Equations-are then -derived-for determining -thc--area-and--volumo.---Aft-e-r-
this, the author derives the equation of minimum volume in the form of the sum of
integrals, and determines whether the conditions of continuity of deformation are

ABSTRACT: This article dia .cusses the selection of cross sections of systeins having
equal resistance to bend. The author commences by determining the stresses in
statically indeterminable systems of minimum weight by solving the equations of
least volume. The areas of the cross sections are then determined with respect to
the distribution of the stresses# after which the cross sections are selected. The
author then examines both symmetric and nonsymmetric forms of cross sections to de-
termine the distance from the center of gravity to the most distant point, the mo-

I ABSTRACT: A method is proposed for selecting optimum inhomogeneous meshes when numer,
ically solving a system of N ordinary differential equations:

obtained in the least possible number of steps. An inhomogeneous mesh (network) is
given by means of constantX , termed the parameter of the network, and the continuous-
ly differentiated function ~(x) of the distribution of the network steps so that at

Optimality of the network is achieved by proper selection Of netw~rVpairameterX and
function ~(x). The algorithm in question is for the solution of eq. (1) and embodies
a preliminary computation which, although-*it does not give y(R) with the necessary
accuracy, still makes it possible to compute Xand ~(x), which makes it possible to
achieve the required accuracy at point I on the second calculation. The paper gives
a method for solving Eq. (1) when N - 1, and adduces two examples of Cauchy problems

ABSTRACT: Producing casting molds by the chemical hardening method has become
very popular. It could not be used,, however., in casting complex shapes because
of the absence of good anti-pickup materials capable of preventing cinder fragments
from adhering to the steel surface. A self-drying zirconium dye was devised by the
TsNI]Tmash for this purpose, It contains (in vol. %) zirconium powder - 53, nitro-
enaniel 624A - 10-15, 646 solvent--32-37. Its specific weight is 1.9-2,0 g/cm3.
Cold castinc, molds blown thro-ugh with CO were covered with the first layer of

this dye land allowed to dry for 4-5 ;~~uies. They were then covered by the second

Layer of the dye and dried for 20-30 minutes. If a double layer did not prevent
the pickup, the molds were covered by three or four layers and dried for a longer
period of time. The steel castings so protected were free of surface defects.
The dye is characterized by its stable pigment suspension, by its high painting
ability, by rapid drying in air, by the formation of a durable layer, and by fast
hardening. One ton of castings required 1.5-2 kg of paint.
