Abstracts A bacteriological examination was made of 23 cases of emphysema-
tosis gangrene in cattle. A relatively fast and easy way of separating
the bacteria is presented. A method is given for isolating pure broth
cultures of Cl. hanvoei, which was identified by morphological, culture,
biochemical and biological tests.

Abstractz The effect is described of the toxins produced by Cl. perfringens
type 0, Cl. septicILM and Cl. oedomatiens on a culture.of chicken embryo
cells. It was found that all tho strains investigated produced definite-
Specific cytopathic changes after on2,y four hours. Toxin determination
sensitivity by the title method was coL..pared with the lecithovitelline
reaction on vhlite mice- The former method was found more sensitive in
investigating anaerobic bacteria. The method is claimed to be cheap, rapid,
reproducible and giving uniform results.

(16. 6(/1,,), 4 of Cl. sporogencs (16. G0/6), and one unidentified strain. The isolated
perfringens and septicum strains were highly virulent and caused th~e death of
guinea pirrs in 12-36 hr. Cl. sporogenes proved to be nonvirulent. The Willis and
Hobbs medium was best for quick strain identification, and for the simultaneous
i study of the lecithinase effect, presence of lipase, and fermentation of lactose. It
allowed distinction of the Cl. perfringens, oedematiens, sporogenes, and botulinum
strains. The Kalinin medium was best for showina blackening (3-4 hr) at the same
time as curdlincy and digestion of milk. The Wilsont-Blair medium was good ondy for

Incidence of Corynebacterium diplitheriae in urine and

In the years 1951-1952 the authors had mider their care 94". children with diplitheria
and made studies with regLrd to the.presence of C. diphtheriae in the blood and
urine of the patients. The children were,2-7 yr. of age. The material for examina-
tion was taken when the children were fa~sting and they had already received penicil-
lin and antidiplitheria scruin. The blood cultures woiT po.,.Ative in. 9 cases out of al,~
cases examined (20.90,16); urine was positive in 21 out of 82 cases (25.6,1/6). Out of tile
9 cases in which C. diphtheriae were found in the blood 8 were type gravis, 1 type
mitis. In the cultures from the urine only in 15 cases out of 21 could tile type be de-
termined: 12 were type gravis, 3.atypical, 2 type mitis. All these strains proved
to be toxic for guinea-pigs. Positive results were obtained most frequently on the
3rd day of the disease. There was no parallelism between positive cultures from
blood and those from urine. In the latter positive results were found in later days
of the disease. The types of germs in the throat, blood ar;d urine were the same.
The methods of collecting material, preparation of culturcs"ana differentiation of

...ABSTRACT: A comparative study of strains of Staphylococcus aureus resistant to pen

Abstract: A method for--the quantitative separation of Fe

thiazine derivatives combined with bi-manol. Improvement occurrad
in 18 cases; the 3 in which it did not occur were hebephrenics.
Previously apathetic patients displayed social activity. Bimanol
adAinistration following that of phenothiazine derivatives consid-

erably improves patients sufforin'.. L'rorn Parkinson s d icase. In
so.m-- cases., ~-.owever, a reverse action of binrinol .-ias observed in
this disease. The amount of phenothiazino - wh3n flombinod with

Abstract: the pressure tank, the level in which is main-
tained constant by a regulator of the float type.
Water passes from the tank into a branch of 6
U-shaped pipe, a siphon with an overflow pipe
on the side is arranged on the other branch.
The siphon can move vertically on a thin rope
flung over a pulley fixed on the same shaft
with the pulley, over which the rope of the cup
manometer is flung. Water from the overflow
pipe flows into a funnel, from where it is dir-
ected into the absorber. Consequently a change

TEXT: The coagulation of polyacrylonitrile from aqueous solution of di-
methyl formamide was studied. The effects due to temperature and concen-
tration of dimethyl formamideand those due to concentration of polyacryl-
onitrile solution, on the transparency of films was determined. Photo-
graphs are given showing the microstructures-of films obtained at concen-
trations of a dimethyl formamide solution between 30 and 70 ~ at 200C and
at 6o ~'. at,15, 30, and .4000. It was shown that a transparent gel without.
bubbles forms from the 40 - 60 ~* aqueous dimethyl formamide solution below,
200C and at a concentration of polymer (molecular weight 73 000),-20

fibers were investigated with extraction
degreas of 4157 30, and 45 percent. On
the basis of experimental data gathered
into 11 tables and 5 graphso.the authors
reach the conclusion that the orientation
does not influence the degree of crystalli-
nity of the fiber and its capacity for fur-
ther crystallization. The process of extrac-
tion causes dissimilar growth of orientation
in the total volume of the fiber: in the be-
ginning the crystals are regulated, and the
molecules of the amorphous areas are straigh-
