TITLE; Production of Nodular Cast Iron
PERIODICAL: dnt8de, 1961, Vol. 12, No. 2, pp. 25 - 32
TEXT: The author wanted to investigate the facilities of casting iron
containing graphite in globular or spheroidal form, generally known as nod-
ular cast iron, to replace thereby mure costly steel castings, forgings,
or structures built of rolled steel. The paper is based/on 59 sources of
mostly patent literature and on some initial research conducted in Hunga7y.
From this, conclusions are drawn for the wider application, The author
excludes from the scope of his paper the Investigation of the possibililies
of using nodular iron castings for all purposes for which they would suit
by virtue of their strength characteristics and does not explain the
theory of formation of spheroidal graphite instead of the common flaky
graphite found in common gray castings. Nodular iron is generally produced
by introducing magnesium or magnesium-base alloys or compounds into the

melt. 22 such additions are listed. Another way is to treat the liquid
iron with various salts and other compounds, 11 of which, are listed. All
these methods have the disadvantage that much deadweight is introduced
into the melt causing great heat drop. Western foundry practice has long
stuck to these easy methods. The use of pure magnesium reduces the quan-
tity of additions. In the Soviet Union, pure magnesium has mostly been
used. The amount of magnesium can further be reduced by applying on the
surface of the melt a pressure higher than the saturation pressure of Mg
vapor at the prevailing temperature. The TsNIIMASh (Central Scientific
Research Institute of 11achinery and Metalworking) designed for this pur..
pose a hermetically sealed pouring drum (Fig. 9, Ref~. 42) with exchange-
able receptacles for the magnesium added. A pressure up to 6 atm can be
kept above the melt, The Polish JPK-58 (the letters are initials of the
authors of Ref. 43) pouring drum (Fig, 12) is similar with the exception
that a Mg rod is fed into the melt at the bottom by an electric motor. A
drum of 1~5 t capacity of this type was successfully tested in Hungary. A
Czechoslovak equipment presses molten Mg by CO 2 pressure into the liquid

iron (Fig. 10, Ref- 44) through a tube. In another Polish devicegan Mg rod
is fed into the receiver of a receiver-type cupola furnace (Fig. 131 Ref,
59). The author recommends this solutionfor Hungary,. The pig iron charged
into the furnace must be poor in impurities, such as P, Ti, Pb, Bi, Sb, Al,
Cu, Sn, As, Se, Te. Much literature is devoted to the presence of slag
inclusions (cope effeot),and preventive measures are cited; in the first
.place, a high tapping temperaturetwhich in the easiest way is obtainable
in an electric furnace. The American Ford.Company uses a cupola furnace
with basic lining and hot blast. The author recommends this method.for
testing in Hungary. His conclusion is that the more elaboratebut costly
methods described are suited for more delicate machine castings, while the
old and simpler methods suffice for rough castings. He sees good prospects
in the use of nodular iron castings for crankshELfts of Diesel engines in
the first place, whereby machining costs may be saved, In the Soviet Union,
crankshafts of railroad Diesel engines are cast of nodular iron poured from
the elec~tric furnace by special methods. There are !A, figures and 59 refer-

abstract 19B215P (Hungarian Patent, o1. 48 d., no. 148167 of

TEXT: A patent was issued for a method imparting antifriction properties
to cast-iron or steel surfaces of parts. A particular. -feature of the method
is the spraying or application by galvanic means of Cu, Cr, Ni, Ag. Mo, In. Pb,
Zn or Sn metal in a I - 40 micron layer onto the sUrfaces. The part is then
placed in a hermetically sealed bath with sulfur compounds and is held there
for 0.5 - 8 hours at,200 - 800 0C. The bath may be composed of solids or molten
salts; the sulfur diffuses from these substances into the part to 1- 300 micron
'depth, forming sulfides. Subsequently the parts-are cooled down to 100 0C and
washed in hot water during 10 15 minutes. After drying they are heated in oil

"Citric Acid Secretion of the Genitalia in Female Cattle."
Budapest, Magyar A-111atorvosokJapia, Vol 5, No 18, May 63, PP 198-201.
Abstractz [Authors' English summary modified] The citric acid concentra-
tion of the various genital organs was determined by paper chromatography
on samples taken from living and slaughtered cattle. It was shown that
the citric acid secretion was continuous and independent of the serum
citric acid level. High6st secretion was found in the oviduct, with de-
creasing concentration in the uterus and cervix. The presence of citrate
was also demonstrated in the ovarian follicle fluid, irrespective of
the phase of the cycle. The citrate content of the cervico-vaginal mucus
var-J.es with the phases'of the cycle, missing during estrus and appearing
during diestrus. Further investigations are called for to determine the
ause of this variation. 2 Hungarian, 8 Western references. _j

"The Treatment of the Retention of Fetal Membrane and the Prevention of
its Consequences by Use of "Septimetrin", a New Preparation."
Budapest, Magyar Allatorvosok Lapia, Vol 18, No 10, Oct 63, pages 411-416.
Abstract: [Authors' English summary modified] Containing citric acid, boric
acid, Thloramphenicol. and Superseptyl, the domestically produced I'Septimetrin"
is used especially:br the so-called dry treatment of fetal membrane re-
tention and its consequences. The dose recommended for various species is
given. The drug should be introduced into the womb 6-24 hours after de-
livery. In 15-ZO minutes violent uterine contractions are observed and the
membrane is shed or can be removed in 70-80 per cent of the cases. The drug
is a strong bactericide and promotes the completion of uterine involution.
~4arm aqueous solutions of the drug can be used for infusion in cases of in-
complete uterine involution, It is especially effective in 'the treatment of
brucella infected herds. Also used for treatment of uterine prolapse, the
drug is simple to use and effective. 8 Hungarian, 3 Western references.

Abstract: (Author's Hungarian summary modified3 The realization of the open
-door principle, at the psychiatric ward of the hospital, is described in
detail. The atmosphere of the entire ward became more friendly, cheerful and
free. A large number of the patients turned to the realities of life from their
autism. In the author's opinion, application of the open door principle pro-
vides favorable conditions for the recovery of psychotic patients and, there-
fore, its widespread application is recommended. 7 Hungarian, 1 Western
