PURPOSE: This booklet is designed to give information on the joinb:q,, of meshed
concrete reinforcement rods by spot weldingg, as practiced in the UISSR.
COVEM4ZE: The authors explain the advantages of the new *--thod of velding and give
basic data on it6 application. They point out tbut extensive Indul-itrialization
of fabricating steel reinforcements in the USSR has been made possible solely
through the use of spot welding for joining together the rvinforeement structures.
The old method of using tie wire, it is stated, has proved too tim~-conisuming and
has been replaced by the more efficient spot-velding method. D-uins 1955 and
1956, according to the authors, 402 plants and '200 y,~wdz for the mr;~nufacture of
prefabricated reinforced concrete members were scheduled to be put into operation.
There are 7 references, all Soviet.

TFXT: The"Elektrik" Workq takes the lead in the manufacture of
electric welding equipment and its production mainly determines
thelevel, of welding technique in the Foviet Union. In 1955, It
was decided to specialize the "Tv'lektrik" Warlrn on the mnnufacture
of large electric welding equipmont and the works has now
developod and got into production almoot all type.,; of equiparent
for resistance and arc welding. The main typen of +,quipinent
produced are then enumerated as follows, Serii~s or machinei- type

ranging from 75 to 400 kVA for spot-welding part.i.; ranging from
0.5 to 8 min thick. 1-7,erir.9 of machinen type (APM Plift P) with

stainless steel and other materials in the thickness range
2 to 20 mm; also equipment for hand-welding df aluminium alloyn
in an argon atmosphere in thicknesses of I to 15 mm. A number
of special machines have been built for the automatic and semi-
automatic welding of, for example, grids and frantes measuring
2000 to 3800 mm and rodq from 3 to 1.0 mm dillmeter. A series of

railroad rails. Other types are also mentioned. During the
Seven-Year Plan, the "Elektrik" Works should double itti production
of welding equipment. Older types of equipment will be replaced by
more modern types. A list is given of the typers of machine that
it is proposed to modernize first. In addition, the Works will
develop new types of machines. Among the first will be multi-
electrode welding machines for production flow lines in the
automobile and agricultural machinery industries, railway rolling
stock construction and others. It is also propogied to develop
single-phase machines with up to 500 mm throat for spot and seam
welding of light alloys; also capacitor spot-welding machines for
welding light alloys up to 2 mm thick. The tashii to be solved in
the Seven-Year Plan are difficult ones and wLll require the help of

Research Institute of Electric Welding Equipment. Considerable
attention must be paid to the standardiza Lion of w4O.ding
equipment. Standardized series of electric welding equipment must
be developed and in this the Research Institutes should work In
close collaboration with the manufacturers. It iii necessary to
organize centralized manufacture of electrodes for res.istance-
welding machines, to produce reliable all-metal ignitrons and other
valve equipment, to develop small electro-magnotic contactors and to
publicize work carried out on the design and manufacture of welding
equipment.
