ABSTRACT; Surface cold hardening plays new an important part in modern
machine-building, ao it leads to incrpasln6 fati6ue strength
of machine parts, decreasing sen3itivit~ to surfa~,,e am-
perfection3, hirSher resistance ability with ri~speot to cor-
rosion, adsorption effects, etc.. AlthouFh many inv-~ntiE:a-
tions dealt with structural and mechanical change--q arising
after cold hardening, the role of physico-cheinica-1 inter-
action of the metal subjected to cold hard(:~nin~, with the sur-
rounding media has not be.--n studied thus far.. Th-D authors
undertook to investigate the role of physico-chamical factors
in the run of this process and in the formation of the harden-
ed layer. The Ttathods used in the previous invezitigations by
Lyubimova et al fRef, 2_/ wero omployt~d alao by thin authors
for studying the kinetics of this formation, 21he cold harden-

face Cold Hardening of Metals
experiments are represented by the curves in which the values
of microhardness ar~: plotted versus the number of flattenJnFa
made by the roller, The analysis of these -.urves 3iakes it
possible to que.litatively understand the kinetics of the pro-
cess of cold hardening, The surface layer is hardened with
the increasing number of flattening3 up to a certain maximum;
then the microhardness fall!3 down and rises again. Sometimes
there are 2 peaks on the curve. The authors interpret this
phenomenon by a hypothesis that the surface hardened layer in
periodically transformed into a gla3!3-like substance which
becomes brittle and is destroyed by the subsequent flatteninga
of the rollers The application of some actPre lubricants has
a positive effect or, the formation of the 1~yar, It con-
siderably accelerates the process of plastic deformatio-i of the
surface in the first stages of formation of Lhe layer, and con-
siderably heightens its mechanical propertiet, in the successive
stages of its fcrmation as the microhardric.-;9 attains a value
of about 100 kg/sq mm Thii, indicates that the I.-lurface layer
interacts in some way with the active media, since the maximum

TeSn, and TePb were invostigated. The alloys were propared aiter the mothod of
L. Ya. Kroll, A. Ya. Nashollskiy, and 11. D. KUyBtovskaya (Zavod3kaya laboratoriyal
19611 No. 2). The experimental procedure for the deterrdnation of viucosity and
electrical conductivity is described by V. 14. Glazov and S. N. Ghizhevskaya (DAN SSUS
1964, t. 154, No. 1). The experlmontal results are presented in tabloo and graphe

TEXT: A method has been developed for producing i,1!ies!vei3 in (lilwititie3
of 150 - 500 9, for studying their properties in the laboratory. An Instrument
for grinding fabric, manufactured at the Kiyev Plant of' Metllcal Appliatic"es, wlv~
used (Fig. 1). Dis.,;oLutlon takes place in the gbss container' (3), with knives
having cutting arid mixing blades and rotating at a speed of 11,000 or R,000 rpm.
The compression rubber-metal collar, and rubber liningn of' the head (2) were re-
placed in the plant instrument by a rubber collar an( I linings, rade of' oil-ben-
zine-resis tant rubber, manufactured at the "Kauchuk" Plant. The pre:)aration of
the solution takes about 10 - 20 min, depending on the type of rubber or, the
rubber mix composition. The described instrument can he used to produce adhe-
sives oontaii,ing 60 - IC0% by weight of active filters, up to !C,:) w.p. cf i-abber,
and also viscose rubber solutions. The head ancl blades must oe dlsassc~rrbled
periodically for cleaning and lubricating of the rotijry J),Jrts. There are 2 fig-

ABSTRACT: In this paper, a new method for the study of neutron spectra -- the
denumerable efficiency method -- is discussed. This method has the advantage that
it is applicable to any shape of spectral line and the initial data used in this
method are the integral count velocities, thereby decreasing a statistical error.

presented in graphs. Based on the data, the authors suggest the development of a
simple portable 7 spectrometer. The denumerable efficiency iaethod makes it possible
