ABSTRACT: The method of measuring the coefficient of reflection of radio waves from
an ionosphere layer is used to determine the effective collision fre uency In the F2
layer. For measurements over the period from 18 through 25 April 19N, a value v n
= 0.5 - 5.5-103 sec-1. It is noted that with increase in v the degree of turbift-
ty of the atmosphere increases and the velocity vo of rando~egotion decreases.

TEXT: The surface of aerosil wa3 modified with ethylene Clycol to reduce
the adsorption energy and preserve the hydrophilic charactcr and 3elective

comparatively fast as the time of ethylene glycol action increases, then It
slows down. The number of K-CH 2-CH 2- groups grafted onto the unit surface
varies between 2 and 6 per 1001 2. When one hydroxyl group reacts with one

of nitrogen, n-hexane, and argon vapors was not affected but that of
benzene and methanol va-pors rapidly reduced. This redliction is due to
chemical chanje3 of the surface and their effect on adsorption since the
specific surface of crosil is hardly changed by etherification. In a dense
monolayer, the area por molecule in 6jm - ']I /aMN, where amis the capacitj
of the monolayer, 911 in the specific surface. Substitution of othoxy for
silanol groups causes decrease in a m for methanol and benzene. With nitro-
gen andmethanol the equilibrium constant decreases with increasing 3ubstitu-
tion degree. *Grafting may be,applied to diol substitutiont (1) to one or
two OH groups (2) to -Si-O-Si- bridges, and (3) to bridges and OR groups.
More complex compounds mLy form on the surface since othylore glycol forms
polymer chains in the prenence of oxide catalysts. This causes a composite

with dimethyl dichloro silana thus forms a thick, continuous polynethyl

The modification of bighly dispersed silica aerosil by
hydrothermal treatment

TEXT: The influence of temperature and duration-of hydrothermal treatment
on the aerosil's specific surface area and power to aleorb nitrogen is
systematically studied, and some samples were examined by electron
microscope. The original material was industrial aero*sil prepared by
high-temperature hydrolysis of SM 4 &a well as the materialSk-1 (VK-1)
prepared by burning off silico-organic ompounds. The hydrothermal

treatment was accomplished at 120 - 410 C in periods 6anging between 4
and 132 hrq after which the samples were dried at 150 C and their
adsorption of nitrogen at its boiling point *as measured. From this the
..specific surface area was calculated by the BET method. Results in

Table I show that the specific surface diminishes with increasing
temperature and duration of hydrothermal treatment. Electron microsc'ope
exposures showed that this is due to coarsening of the particles. If
the absolute amount of adsorption is plotted against p/pa (where pa is the
saturation vapor re sure of the nitrogen) a very reproducible isotherm is
obtained'.(Table 2 . Within the range p/p., M 0-015 - 0.3 this can be

to determine the specific surface area of a nonporous or large-pore
silica with hydrated surface area from a single experimentally fixed

TITLE: The Effect of the Degree of Surface Modification of Silica by
Trimethylohlorosilane on Its Absorptive Properties

ABSTRACT: In previous papers (Refs 1, 2) the authors showed that the
physico-ohemical surface properties of highly dispersed
matorialep such as carbon black or silica, can be influenced
to a considerable degree by chemical reactions. The preeent
paper reports on experiments carried out under the cooperation
of L. I, Doroshinal, M. G. KuzImina, 0. M. Lyulina, and
L. P. Pavlova, with the aim of reducing the adsorbing capacity
of highly dispersed non-poroue silica (aeroeil) for
hydrocarbons. To attain this, the aerosil surface was occupied
with Si(cH3)3-groups. Since complete occupation is only
poanible on previously hydratized ailicay the following

sample Al, (2) original aerosil, modified by treatment with
trimethylohlorosilans - sample AlMg (3) aoroeil hydratized
in an autoclave - sample AIR# and (4) aeroeilp hydratized in
an autoclavaq and then modified by treatment with trimetbll-
chlorosilane - sample AlHM. The amount of trimethylailyl-
groups adhering to the allica, surface was determined by
means of microelementary analysis. The degree 0 Si(CH 3)3
to which the surface area is occupied is calculated from the
size of the trimethylailyl-groups (42 R2). The specific
surfacet its carbon content',# and the degree to which it is
occupied by trimethyleilyl-groups are shown in table 1. The
effect of these groups lies in the fact that the interepaces
between the groupep even when the surface is not oom4ded completely,
but only in the manner of a mosaic - become so small that
the larger hydrocarbon molecules are not able to penetrate
to the surface. The adsorption isotherms for vapors of
n-hexane# benzeneq and methanol are given in figure 1,
those for water in figure 2. The adsorption of hydrocarbons
is decreased less than that of water on a 58% modified e

surface. 93% Modification produces a sharp decrease in the
adsorbing capacity of the surface. The isotherm for heavy
hydrocarbous becomes practically linear. This phenomenon may
be of value for the chromatographic separation of hydro-
carbon mixtures by means of gas adoorption. There are

TITLE: Geometrical and Chemical Modifications of Silica Gel for
Purposes of Gas dhromatography

TEXT: The present paper deals with the crystalline and the chemical
modifications Of S102- Silica gel of the type W CK(ShSK) served as the
initial material. Industrial silica gel was washed with diluted hydro-
chloric acid (1:1) for the purification of iron and other metal ions
(up to the nej;ative reaction with ammonium thiocyanate, and with
distilled water for the purification of Cl ions (up to the negative
reaction with silver nitrate). This purified CH (BI) silica gel had an
inhomogeneous surface and constituted the initial material for the

treating SG with liquid trimethyl ohloro silane. The analysis of SGM for
C content showed that 100 A of the SGM surface contained 1.22% C, i9e*,
on an average, 2-7 trimethyl chloro silyl groups. This corresponds to a
coating by organosilicon film of an almost maximum density. Prior to the
adsorption experiments, the samples were heated for a fairly long time
in vacuum adaorbers in small suspended quartz crucibles at 1500C and a
pressure of i-io-5 mm Hg. In the range of pressure ratios of p/ps from o
to 1, isothermal lines were obtained for the adsorption and the
desorption of benzene vapor. In the case of SG the isothermal line
deviates sharply toward the lower right side. With the beginning of the
capillary condensation the hysteresis curve shifts from p/pg - 0.2 for SI
to PlPs - 0-75 for SG. At p/ps - 0.1, the benzene adsorption a on SI and
SG equals 2pmole/m2, whereas a. O.Ipmole/m2 for SGM. In other words, the
benzene adsorption drops to the 20th part with the chemical modification
(SGM). Experiments with SGM mere conducted jointly with R. S. Petrova,
N. Ya. Smirnov, V. 1. Kalmanovskiy, N. Balakhnina, and Ya. I. Yashin.

Experiments concerning the possibilities of application of SGM for
ohromatograpfiy were made with a ohromatograph of the firm Griffin and
George, featuring a column 4mm in diameter and 1m in length. Benzene was
kept in the oolumn at normal temperature for 30 min. At 820C~ the time for
benzene was 12140"s and 1150" for hexanes For benzene-hexane separations
by gas-adaorption chromatography, the silica gele used were impregnated
with silicon E-301 (Y6-301). As may be seen from Fig. 2 (2 Sand 2 B)
benzene-hexane mixtures are more quickly distributed by the method of gas
adsorption than by the gas-liquid method. There are 2 figures# 1 table,
