54. Sev-exal kilometers east of the .city is located the Smyshl-!aye: ka airport.
Uni about 1946, a "transmission regiment"'was stationed at this airport, whose
function it was to receive the planes produced by Kuybyshev aircraft factories
and to fly them. to a.des.tination indicated by the Ministry of Defense. After
194:6.a special base was established at $n]yshlyayevka airport for the retention
,of complete aircraft., since,, apparently, it was .not,1 nger necessary to dispatch
these planes to military units These ph,snes were heavily greased, covered with
hoods; and left in the open.
55. Until 194 there was stationed at Smyshlyayevka the Second Separate Leader Air
Squadron (Vtoraya,Otdelnaya AvAA'tsionnay.a. Eskadrilya Liderov). It was so named
because the planes belonging to this squadron escorted new planes being taken
from the factories. over routes unfamiliar to their pilots.
